My 9-5 Aero Estate 2007 - 130,000 miles intermittently cuts out when driving. Cut out recently on a dual carriageway at 70mph. Fortunately coasted to a stop. Started again after several minutes. Clearly dangerous. Local SAAB garage cannot find the fault. Sent car to electrical engineer - he too could not find the fault.

There’s a whole plethora of reasons these engines can cut off.
Start easy, you need always air, fuel, spark, and timing to keep an engine running.

When was the spark plugs replaced? Replaced with correct type?
When was DIC replaced? Was it replaced with correct type?
When if ever was the fuel filter and fuel pump replaced? Were they tested good at mechanic shop?
Has CPS been replaced with genuine Bosch unit, if replaced ever?

Then you can get into the nasties…
Check engine / stored codes accessed by Tech2? Any codes read?
Vacuum leaks, do you have any vac lines not replaced or tested good?
Boost leaks, has car been tested for leaks? A bad enough leak will cause the engine to stall out due to too rich conditions.
The brake booster hard plastic lines, have these been checked for integrity? Same with the bushing fittings.

mechanic should be able to answer at least some of these questions for you considering they tried to diagnose it.

Is the car an auto or a manual? I’m not familiar with the 07s specifically, so which engine does it have that you’re having issues with?

Once again can't diagnose anything without any information other than they can't find anything. With the amount of information that we have on hand concerning this issue I don't think we could rule out anything at this point. Who knows what saab specialist means to someone else

I gather the car runs fine except when it all of a sudden dies? is check engine light on? After it dies, and while you are trying to restart it (cranking but not starting), can you hear the fuel pump buzz for about a second under the back seat?; does the tach move?

Thank you for all the helpful replies. Starting with that from Bob3000, the DIC had been tested and was said to be working properly but I asked that a replacement be fitted. The garage than kept the car for a further period so that it could be tsted by one of their engineers making 10 miles each way daily journeys home. So far the fault has not recurred and the car has been returned.

Again, many thanks.
