I bought my '99 9-5 a bit over a month ago when it was much cooler outside so I don't remember if I checked whether the A/C system blew cold air (I'm pretty sure it did...). Now that the daily highs are in the 90s, I find that the system blows air, but its just barely cooler than the ambient outside temperature, no matter what the setting is.

Any ideas where I should get started trying to track down the problem? Is there any way to check the freon level without having to buy/borrow a gauge? Are there any known issues with the A/C for these cars?

Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome!

I can't believe I haven't retrieved the fault codes after noticing the lack of cold air. When I bought the car, there were no fault codes. When I just started it up now (with the car sitting in direct sunlight for a couple hours), error code 21 popped up, so something to do with the 'recirculation motor'; not exactly something I'm familiar with. Anyone get this error before?

Direct current motor, air recirculation flapCodes are in teh FAQs up above under ACC fault finding.

It takes you here http://www.saab9-5.com/faq_acc.htm

WHEre it says Direct Current Motor Air Recirculaiton Flap

SO I guess you need to tear into the airbox sorry to repair the dreaded heater flap.
