96 900ng Battery drain problem.

Hi all (again). My latest problem is a couple of days ago i went to switch engine off so when i turned the key from ST (engine running) to ON (engine off with all warning lights etc on) it felt like some kind of spring broke in the lock mechanism and it went floppy although i am able to use the ignition it doesn't feel right.
My main problem being the fact that ever since this ignition issue happened the Battery seems to be draining in the space of a couple of hours (but reading 11.5 ish on the multimeter) and i,m guessing (hoping) that whatever broke in the ignition is causing a drain on the Battery, can anyone give their opinion as to the likelyhood of this being the case please.....

Sounds like a new ignition switch is in order. Battery should read 12.5 ish
First you need to find out which circuit is stealing power from the battery. Disconnect the minus wire on the battery and connect a multimeter between it and the battery's minus pole, to measure the current (Amps or milliAmps). Make sure everything is switched off, even the interior light. Then remove the fuses one at a time and observe when the current changes.
Then you get a clue as to where you should look next.
Good luck.:)

I'd start with ignition switch, because OP said that it went bad.

Surely the START position is only momentary, during starter motor engagement, and springs back to ON when you let go. With engine running it's in the ON position so I assume you meant you switched it to OFF to stop the engine? Hopefully so, because if the engine is running with the key in START the starter motor would be having a tough life!

It sounds to me like something has broke in the ignition cylinder/switch assembly. If the drain problem started when that happened, you might pull the assembly out & inspect it. The above test is a good one to locate the source of a backdrain but it sounds like you have a pretty good idea of it already.

That's right, normally once you get to ST the Engine starts and the key SHOULD spring back to ON, this is where the problem is! when you've sta rted the Car you literally have to put the Key back to ON, it doesn't spring back itself.
Replace the ignition lock Barrel and maybe the switch as well or not and see if you still have battery drain problems

Saaberachi, appreciate your input on this issue, but have a major issue with the transmission now! (see Transmission death rattle" post ) which may determine whether or not the Car has to be scrapped unfortunately, hoping someone on here with some knowledge of transmission issues could give me an idea of what the problem could be.
