900s fault codes

2967 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Zaphod Beeblebrox
Hi all, today i wife came in and said the 'check engine light' was on, found a link on here that stated to earth pin 6 on the diagnostic plug and turn the ignition on. did this but nothing happened.

i have used blink codes for years on opel / vauxhalls and on the 16 pin diagnostic plug you bridge pins 4 & 6 to get into blink codes.

now disconected the battery to see if this will clear it - car's running ok just light is on.

the only things i have done over the weekend is :

Replaced new distributor (due to excessive oil leak)
replaced SID (due to defective pixels)

last week I replaced the crankshaft sensor due to finding a bargain on ebay

Any help appreciated

thanks for the advice - disconnected the battery for an hour and it cleared - hopefully it won't come back!!!!!!!! not got a clue what it was - will have to find out which pin to earth cos 6 doesn't work on mine!

I may be stating the obvious here, but is your 900s Motronic or Trionic? The battery will have to be disconnected for at least an hour, preferably more, to clear the CEL. I hope you have your radio code, if the original head unit is fitted.

Hi its a motronic the 2.0l 16v engine - its got a kewood sound system theres a remote that you zap it with a couple of times to code it.

Found a web page that has the fault codes for the 900 classic and its showing earthing pin 16 not 6 on this site for the 900 - will leave the battery off a bit longer don't want to earth the wrong pin

Thanks anyway for the advice

worst thing is this morning i have just fixed someones V6 omega with a fault code - they had rebuilt the engine and pluged a couple of things in incorrectly - fixed it in under a min for FREE then one appears on mine............

You mean this page?http://www.saabcentral.com/users/munki/technical/engine/electrical/cel_codes_motronic.htmMay be worth a quick check of the vacuum hoses for a leak, since you did some work on the vehicle last week, the favourite place being a bad fit from the throttle housing, in my experience.

Someone will be along in a mo', no doubt, with more advice and help

Again, HTH.
I too have attempted the pin-jumping light-flashing method to no avail. Eventually I just bought a OBD II code reader. One option on this side of the pond is a large chain of parts stores, Autozone, will read the codes at no charge. Does Halforths (did I get that right?) do something similar?

I would definitely look more closely at the areas you were working in recently, perhaps a wire connection has come undone, perhaps a vacuum line has come loose.
Hi thanks for the response - ours haven't got OBD2 or OBD EOBD European on board diagnostics only came in around year 2000,

Not far off Halfords - great for a fury dice but no were near the quality places you get in the states - pepboys and so on

I was told once that on OBD2 compliant cars, from 1996 on, there are no flash codes, just the OBD2 connector. Not sure if this is correct, but the CEL does not flash on my car as described in the Haynes manual for the earlier models.

Never heard of grounding a pin... any reference for that? I could use a backup method, because my Iomega 3100 reads some diagnostic codes and not others. The X-Ray reader seems to read all, but costs twice as much.

Apologies for the truncated link above.
