I am wondering if the 9-7x motors are completely interchangible. Meaning if I were to buy a 9-7x with the 4.2L or 5.3L motors, could a 6L LS2 motor bolt right in or do the motor mounts need to be reworked to accept the LS2 motor? They are asking a boatload of money for the Aero version and the others are dirt cheap. Probably easy enough to find a 6L and drop it in much cheaper.

The 4.2 is an I6, where the 5.3 is an LS-based V8 just like the 6.0/6.2 versions (LS2 & LS3 respectively). So if a 6.0/6.2 swap is your plan, definitely grab the 5.3 version.

Following that rational, ANY year 9-7x with the 5.3L motor would work? Or am I still limited to a 2008?

Any year will work IMO.

You would want a 2007+ do to a swap to a different/newer/stronger V8. This gets you a much better PCM (the E67) and the 58x crank trigger. My 2007 5.3i is running a LSA with the 2009 PCM code. I previously ran a LS2 with the 2007 TBSS and 2008 LS2 Aero calibration. I bought mine the week before the Aero was announced and the plan from the beginning was an engine swap.
