I've got shimmies upon acceleration, especially in the 25- 50 mph range.

I recently got the CV Axle replaced on the recommendation of my garage and the shimmy is still there.

We've ruled out wheel balance issues because the car rolls smooth as soon as the foot's off the gas pedal.

Any ideas on what could be causing this shimmy?

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bad CV joints are usually noisy when turning with a characteristic tick-tick-tick sound. The inner tripod joints will get worn and the shafts can go off-center during acceleration. Changing the shaft will not always cure this since the wear is often in the cup on the tranny side and not in the bearings on the shaft.

Could be a small misfire. Mine did this and got worse over time. Still trying to get it fixed, but I think I will have it done tonight. Look to see if it only happens when the turbo is fully boosted. If so it is most likely a bad coil pack. You could also need new plugs.

If it's a bent rim it could do any number of things at any number of speeds.

I finally ordered 4 new rims and tires from tirerack.com earlier this week due to the fact that the shimmies and shakes change whenever I rotate my tires.

Everyone is very right to say that this is the problem %99 of the time.

Ha I just did the same thing a couple weeks ago. What wheels did you pick? I got the 17" Elbrus 102 rims (only $99/rim) and Bridgestone Potenza P019 tires. I like them a lot:cheesy:

I got the Elbrus 104 rims, with the black accents. I didn't want to go all the way to 17 inches, so I bought the 16in model. I'm not really a rim person, but I thought that the black accent might look nice with a black car.

The tires are Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S.

My Nokian WRG2s wore down prematurely. I have to get 2 of them replaced under warranty, but I don't trust them for year round use anymore. I've only had them a year (15k miles) and they're almost down to nothing. So I'm now going to have 2 winter tires on the stock wheels.

Nice! I was seriously debating getting the 104's. But I wanted 17" rims and decided against the black accents (although if my car was black, I probably would've sucked it up and gotten the 104s)

+1 on the rims, I had a very bad shake between 25 and 50ish also, replaced the passenger side axle and support bearing and it cured 90% of the vibration, then when I put my lowering springs/KYB's and BBS's on with a fresh alignment all vibration is now gone.
