Hey everyone. I've been gone for awhile, enjoying a well running SAAB.
I really didn't enjoy driving that will running SAAB in the winter though. Convertibles are cold, and it's a convertible, in the winter. I have been casually looking for something cheap to drive next winter, with no big rush.
I found a 87 900S automatic for cheap. It was rough, unknown running condition, though the PO said her mechanic wanted to take it to his shop. It's plates expired 3/2010, so I knew it would be ....interesting...
Bought it anyway.
Got it to the shop and started assessing my purchase. Trans fluid was just a drop, no coolant, oil was acceptable. There were no spots on the ground where it had been parked, so that was a plus. Paint was trashed, but it's a winter car.
Gave the old girl power, hazards immediately started flashing, I had a feeling there was no mechanic. It was probably towed home and parked. Pulled the plugs, sprayed in some fogging oil and went home. Gave it a few cranks the next day, some more fogging oil, and replaced the plugs. Gauges lit like they should, but she was quiet. Grabbed the fire extinguisher, just in case, gave it some starting fluid, and it fired, then died. I've tried again repeatedly during troubleshooting, same results.
Well, now it's relatively disassembled. The ECU is on the floor, the trunk floor is out, and the shop smells like old gas. The fuel pump is good, fuses are good, the SAAB Guard is removed, fuel pump relays are hanging out from under the dash, and have been tested.
The fuel pump relay does not trigger (closest to the door), however the other relay does (closest to the firewall). Jumping the relay, and both 87 pins does nothing. I haven't tried to break into the wiring to see if the power is making it to the rear of the car.
I'm kind of at a loss now. I've spent a ton of time searching both here, the Internet and my Haynes manual. It still fires with ether, though I have yet to pop the fuel rail. I honestly don't even know if the automatic is good yet. FWIW, It was originally a California car, though the B-pillar says approved for Federal.
Ideas?
