Hi,

I have a rebuilt 06 9-3 2.0T I inherited. The driver belt (pre?)tensioner has weakened to the point the belt can only retract if I feed it by hand. Since I need a safety certificate to make it road legal (which will fail w/ the seatbelt in this state) I want to replace it. I've washed the belt w/ soapy wooder to try to put some life into it with no luck.

I picked up a replacement from a scrapyard from an 06 9-3 Aero (12756362) figuring it would be identical but when I took off my B-pillar trim I found a different type of tensioner. Looking at the WIS, the replacement looks like the one on page "Belt pretensioner (236D, 236P)" while the one I have installed looks like the one on page "Belt pretensioner (236C, 236P) (236RD, 236RP, CV)" (has the little cylinder sticking out). I can't see what the item code is for my tensioner because it's mostly rubbed off.

So does this essentially mean my rebuilt Saab has a convertible's tensioner installed (I thought the convertible inertia reel is built into the seat)? Or does it just mean either tensioner is compatible? If so can I just install my replacement? The WIS says both types of tensioners connect to the same pin 20 (B+) and pin 21 (GND) on the airbag control module.

EDIT: After some sleuthing I found an image of a driver side tensioner that looks like mine (for an 04 9-3 turbo). With some image enhance of my rubbed off part # I figured out it matches (12796393) the one in the picture. eEuroparts indicates that part # is one of several prior numbers (12757687 [05 PA], 12796393 [03-04 ME, PA], 12800615 [03-04 CA,US], 93184087 [05 CA,US], 93185654 [06-10 CA,US]) for part # 12760074. Now 12760074 looks a lot like my replacement tensioner (12756362) but I can't find anything on 12756362 anywhere except ebay and extreme-auto-parts.com where it says it's for 03-10 SS'es. Is there any reason to think it wouldn't be compatible for my 9-3?

Any help is very much appreciated

You have dirt in upper belt hanger between it and belt.
I clean them with 400 grid (wet) sand paper which is same width than hanger hole.

I had the same issue, got a brand new seat belt & tensioner from eEuro last spring for $70 (I see price has gone up a $5, and looks like they're out of stock at present). Really nice improvement to the vehicle, not only is the new belt clean and not frayed, but the retraction is better than new. Here is the link.

Good luck!
