This box, an Aisin Warner, is notorious for this problem of hard shifts. The ultimate fix is a new or recon valve body, it does not need a new box.

Any competent trannie specialist knows the problem, it affects not just Saabs but also Volvos and others.

At this stage with your car make sure it has had a full trannie fluid flush, not just a simple change. Then check to see if a software update for the box has been done as that may help the shifting.

If that doesn't fix it a trannie expert can fix new solenoids into the valve body or fit a recon body. Its a very simple procedure that doesn't even need removal of the box. Here in the UK a local Saab specialist will fit a fully recon'ed body for around £450.
