The first thing you want is service records. Find out how often the oil was changed and with what type/weight oil. The last thing you want is an engine full of sludge. FInd out what units have been replaced. Turn the key to the on position to check that all the lamps on the dash light - especially oil and check engine. Take it for a drive and determine if there are any peculiar noises or vibrations. See if it tracks straight, and if the brakes stop in a straight line. Open the hood and see if the engine is warm; if it's warm, it may have been started earlier to avoid a smoking exhaust. Look for smoke out the exhaust when you first start it up. Check for abnormal tire wear, or brand new tires; either could indicate a misaligned car, and only toe in/out can be adjusted - everything else requires the bend parts replaced. Let us know how you do... Ron

You get what you pay for!

Keep in mind that my login is "....saabnewbie"
I have spent way too much time lately looking at Saab's on ebay, craigslist etc.
Only 1 in XXX (30,40,100) Saab's have all of the record's. Most Saab's don't blow up their engines due to sludge. If an owner "has the records" he can ask more for the car. According to this site (which is awesome by the way) even if you do everything right you may have a sludge problem. If you buy a used car you may have something major go wrong the week after you buy the car. My advice; Do your homework and get a great looking car that is a good value. If you're not already a DIY'er than this is a good time to start. Even if your new saab doesn't have records you're likely to get a pretty good value. My experience; Not even shopping for a saab but took a chance at an auction. $2000 for 1999 9-3 with 130,000 miles in september. Loved the car and quickly became a Saab lover. Found a red 2001 red Viggen vert with 100,000 for $7800 in December. I did eventually drop the oil pan and found about 30% blockage. I love this car and may still have it in 20 years. Good luck and go for it!!!!!
