1999 Saab 93 Convertible intermittent instrument cluster blackout

366 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  jvanabra
For the most part the dashboard instrument cluster is completely dead, but while driving and on random occasions, all the cluster lights flash rapidly, the turbo and speed needle wildly rotate for approximately 20-40 seconds before some of those cluster (warning/notification) lights remain permanently lit. Then the speedo and turbo needles work, but nothing else. When I use the vehicle next time, it is back to the whole cluster being dead and nothing lights up or works. Any ideas on what could cause this?

Initially when believing it an OG 9-3 i thought electrical . eg Bad connection at the back of the cluster.

IF it is in fact an MY93 ( Classic 900 ) then that diagnosis goes right out the window as the Turbo gauge and the speedo are not electrical . The 1993 in the title must surely be a typo

My apologies, yeah it was a typo. Make that a 1999 Saab 93.
If I'm guessing I would say some solder joints on the cluster have failed.

Okay thanks, I will take a look and see what I can find.
Yeah, step 1 would be to check the connector. Step 2, if you're good with a soldering iron would be to look for and reflow cold solder joints. Or just find a replacement.

If you've never pulled a cluster before, we can provide hints. Also, go to the Tech II forum and download the WIS from the sticky thread there.
Thank you, this is great information and I will follow your advice. I have a soldering iron and I am willing to figure this out =)
I have a similar issue with my 98 900. Im planning on going over and hitting the solder joints with an iron to reflow them. Anyone have any tips for that?
In my case I can be stationary and this can occur, making me think its not the solder joint, because there no movement to affect it?
If the engine is running, there are vibrations. Also temperature can affect solder joints. Not saying for certain that's the issue, but I wouldn't assume that it's not just based on sitting still.
