Our 1992 900i has a bad ATF leak. The leak is located between the forward and middle oil pan at the flange where the housings are joined together. We checked the oil pans for leakage, they are OK. The converter itself is dry. The gasket between the housings seems to be a black paper gasket. I am not sure how a paper gasket can leak so badly provided that the bolts are torqued correctly. Is there any way to get access to the bolts holding the housings together and check the torque without removing the transmission from the car?

That is a common leak. It is pretty difficult to repair. You would have to remove the transmission and there are a number of pipes that run from one half to other half of the transmission that need installed in the correct order.
