Hi, my name is Danny and I am new to these forums and have been looking around, but I have yet to see anything really in depth about my car. I have a 1987 Saab 9000 Turbo and I was just wondering if it would be worth it to tune the car up with many upgrades? Such as a new ECU upgrade, intercooler (if possible), but yea just wanted some input before I start spending more money and digging myself in a hole... If it is a good idea then please help me in where I would start.
:cheesy:
Thanks for your time!

Thanx

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the input, but in the time that has past since the last post I have discussed many things with my father and have come to a decision that I want to get a new car. So, I'm going to just save the money I was going to put into this car, and try to get a Nissan 300zx twin turbo (what do you guys think about that?). If i could keep my Saab i would, but i just don't see it in my future to keep using it, but thank you all again for your input!

I say stick with the saab they are awesome cars and with a little tuning they go go go. But if your gonna cheat then at least stay european like a vw gti vr6 or 1.8t their pretty cheap and are good runners easy to mod or a bmw 3 series. The 300z's are a big moneypit and aren't any cheaper to modify unless you go cheap. My buddy had one and was fixing stuff all the time he ended up selling it and buying a m3. The z's dont look that bad but the quality isn't the same and it doesn't have class like a saab 9000.

Plan out your development to see if you get the bang for your buck your looking for
1) if your fun factor is as much the path to getting there with a lot of your own input then the SAAB is hard to beat - big bang for not a lot of buck- heck of a sleeper car that can easily be progressed to the better side of 300HP and manage to hold it,s own round the bends - go log onto http://saablink.net/forum/index.php for some nice USA tuned 9000,s
2) if your preference is on buying a package ready to go - with the aim to do some development in due course - have reasonable money to spend - and or - don,t have the time / garage / skills to self build - then the 300z will get you rolling in a decent fashion quicker

well...

Hey, well There is a lot of work on my Saab that needs to be fixed (brother f’ed it all up) and it seems very overwhelming right now:(, there is the door panels that are held on by screws (and not in the best shape), the back windows that don't have the motors to roll them up and down, i need seat belts in the back seats, the sun roof leaks and the guy we got to re-upholster the headliner broke a screw on it... -_-, the body itself leaks, it has to do with some holes where the fan is… I can’t even wash the thing, the engine is good, and the transmission slips at times, oh and the back driver break caliper leaks, which we tried to fix and only slowed the amount it leaked. Typing this up makes me want to sell it and start fresh. The only thing it is very good at right now is saving me money on gas (in which I get at least 23mpg).

I think saving my money would be better in the long run because I could probably get a car that is nice all around (with no major body issues) and fast. I think the 300zx is a good choice with the twin turbo and tuning it up will just take time, and more money as with anything else.

As with any plan they may not go accordingly, so I’m just focusing on just saving some money for a better car, and I will make the decision when I actually have the money in hand. The 300zx would be a, I guess you could say, "dream car" that is easy to achieve for me lol, but if it were to be a real “dream car” I would want a Mazda rx7 twin turbo... but hey that's just me.

As you can tell I just really like twin turbo cars, I know some may need premium gas, but I think it would just be very fun to have… Right now I have about 2k and selling a bronco ii for about 2k, I just need to sell it first. So when I save about 5k I will start looking to see if there is anything for me, but I doubt it…

Thanks for your time.

I at least want a car that i can rely on, and yesterday i the transmition slipped big time and i had to pull over to see what happened. Turns out the transmition is leaking... stupid car!

Hi Danny!

It looks like you have a dilemma. As far as a 300, RX, or Supra; don't waste your time or money. You might have 5K to spend, but that's just going to get you a dog of a 300, RX and more so of a Supra. So let's just get those right out of the running.

You have a 9000 turbo with some body trouble, but it runs ok? IIRC, needs a clutch, that's about it? My .02, keep the Saab, wisely spend your money on fixing the obvious, getting tuned, and then LEARNING how to fix the rest.

After that, if you have money, spend it on driver education. Nothing is better for performance than modding the driver. Bar none, it's the best bang for your buck.

Yea, I guess your right... =/ yea it runs good. and i found out the slipping is caused to lack of transmition oil, i am currently checking it every time i use my car and making sure it warms up before i take off, so yea now its not slipping thank god!
Okay well what do you mean by IIRC?
The transmition is leaking mostly from a hose so thats a good thing i just need to ask my dad, who is busy alot of the time, to help me fix it.

THIS IS MY FINAL CHOICE (i hope) I'm probably going to keep the Saab while i save my money, and if the cards are right just sell it and get newer saab... even though GM is shutting it down (is this still true?).

I probably wont tweak this one, and ill just work on my Hypermiling.

Thanks to all who have posted. =]]

I think that is a good choice. You'll learn a lot about reliability vs performance. You can drive your friends around when their cars break.

IIRC = If I Remember Correctly

As for GM, I wouldn't worry too much about it, as GM was a crappy manufacturer anyway...

For clarification, when I said "driver training" I don't mean your driving school to get your license, but advanced handling courses. Skip Barber and Bob Bondourant have excellent schools where you can really learn to drive a car fast.

Enjoy...

Not unless it's crapping out. If you're losing fluid, you'll need to figure out why and fix that before you have to buy a new tranny.

GM owns Saab, and they are indeed shutting it down. I believe last Friday was the last day at the factory. There are rumors floating around about new ownership, but I'm not a rumor passer so you'll have to use the internets for that...

I'm currently in a similar situation...I have a '92 9k turbo with about 171k miles on it...I'm having some problems with the clutch and with shifting...Other then that everything is pretty good minus a few things here and there. I'm looking at stuff to upgrade on it for fairly cheap (after i fix the clutch) such as a short shifter...anybody know where i can find one?
