Now that the weather is not insanely cold, I am starting work on my 86 SPG.

1st on the list is prepping a good transmission.
The original has a tooth missing from the ring gear.
The roll pin on the shift selector rod came out, and broke the gear. All other gears appear good. Transmissions are a weak area for me, so hopefully I will be able to replace the gear successfully. I have several extra 5 speeds with varying problems, but I do have a good diff from an 87 that had a cracked transfer case.....let the suffering begin.....

Do read up on the ring gear mating to the pinion shaft. They are a matched set at the factory and need to be changed as a set, unless you own the complete transmission adjustment tools to align all the splines correctly.

Looks like Edwardian Grey to me... not Green. Plus, Edwardian Grey was the only color that was offered on 86 SPG's.

Yeah, I have never been sure exactly what color this car is.
It looks greenish in the sunlight, and looks grey at night.
The prod date is 11/85, so it's an early 1986 if that means anything.

I have decided to swap out the transfer case on another trans I have from an 87 donor car.
The donor lost a chain and cracked the case, but everything else looks good. I already have another transfer case for it.

Nah, it's definitely Edwardian Grey... 85 only came in black, 86 only in Ed. Grey. ;)

Looks like a trans I saved from a 93 will be the one going in. I have 5 transmissions, and this is the only one without any obvious visible problems. I was told this transmission was bad, but after opening up the case and looking around, I don't see a single bad gear. No metal shavings or chips lying around. I am taking it to a friend of mine that owns a Saab shop to have him inspect it, just to be sure.

After a few months of hunting and gathering parts, I got the motor/trans together and in the car.
Added a water cooled turbo.
Found an absolutely flawless dash at the wrecker today.
Not so much as a hint of a crack.
I will pick that up tomorrow, along with a clutch slave/master cyl combo from the same car.
I already have a good dash for the car, but the one at the wreckers is the nicest one I have ever seen, so...

Last week the car got an all new front suspension and new bushings in the steering rack. New p/s hoses as well.

I replaced the front spindles and rear axle with stuff from a 93 donor car.
Had to replace one bad wheel bearing, but that was no big deal.
Now I can put on my 16" Aero's!

The car came to me with Jamex 1 1/2" lowering springs and Bilsteins all around, so those are staying.

Still a long way to go, but so far, so good.....
