Hey All,

New to the forum and hoping for some guidance. My neighbor recently purchased a 1970 95 - in great shape and mechanically strong. Unfortunately he went to pull it out of storage for the summer and the fuel pump has crapped out. It's clearly an aftermarket unit and will likely replace with same as he is not particularly concerned with originality. The question I have is will a standard electric fuel pump work or are there any special considerations for this engine?

Thank you for any guidance or advice!

Cheers,

Hi there and welcome!

The ‘70 95 would NOT have an electric pump from Saab. Those cars (along with 96 and 97/Sonett) only had the mechanical pump. Now, many choose to upgrade to an electric fuel pump and I don’t blame them as it’s much less likely to vapor lock. It will need to run at very low pressure, I’d guess in the 2-3 psi range since it’s just a carburetor and not fuel injection (obviously lol).

Another frequent problem with all of those cars is sludge in the gas tank… make sure all of the old gas is out and try to flush it through if you can, before it gums up your carburetor…!

Have your friend remove it and take it to a NAPA store and see if they can source it. Perhaps a Ford/Mercury Capri of that vintage that had a 1.7 Lt Taunus V4 engine.
