I have read that the Matra 530s (which were originally fitted with the Ford V4 1700cc engine as fitted to the Taurus 17M, mid-mounted) often had a "Saab kit" fitted when they were racing. But I cannot find any more details than that loose phrase.
Does anyone know please?

And/or, can anyone please suggest what modifications can be fitted to that engine without losing reliability?

Many thanks,
Mark

Might have been referring to Saab Sport & Rally components, which used to be offered by the factory.

You can do pretty much anything you want to the 1700's. There are different intakes, carbs, cams, pistons, etc all available. Depends on you budget... ;)

Thanks

Many thanks for the reply. Could you suggest a specialist with an on-line site. I am keen to try to quantify what this could actually mean in terms of what is possible, plus costs! Motor vehicle Vehicle Car Automotive design Drawing

By the way, i remember going for a road test in a new 95 with my father back in the early 70s in UK and thought it was so cool! Actually, i would love to keep my Matra company with a 95/96 or Sonett. I guess, especially for the latter, it would probably mean importing one from the US however, then paying import taxes etc, which might make it prohibitively expensive.

I'd say most people start with Mark Ashcraft's website (http://markashcraft.com/parts/) where you can download his V4 catalog. There are others obviously, but that's a great start. His dad wrote a lot of V4 repair and performance manuals too, so you can do that as well.

You can also download the old Saab Sport & Rally catalog which had some insight as to how the factory spiced up their rally engines.

Or, you can do what I'm doing, which is a complete reworking of the engine with forged internals, EFI with wideband O2, turbo, etc... But that's quite an undertaking, trust me...

Fantastic - that's wonderful, thank you so much for that advice. It's fantastic to read that 120-140bhp is possible from the 1700cc V4. What are you aiming for with yours? This is exactly the sort of knowledge I want as it might really shape what I want to get out of my car. Do I go for a sleeper (following this info you shared with me, this is my current thought!), or completely stock show car, or period replica rally, etc. So thanks so much!

Seeing how friendly and welcoming you guys are on here I am having another "dream" - a nice 95 V4 as my every day car and parts chaser! Hmmm!

Any more ideas please keep them coming (not forgetting that space is an issue in the Matra - mid-engined set-up)!

I have tons of spares for the v4 and extracting 100+hp is quite simple. Port the intake, port the exhaust, put a pipe on it, a big Weber, big cam, big valves, deck the heads and block...done.
Most of the performance equipment is just modifying you existing components and buying only a few things (cam, carb/manifold, valves, exhaust)
