there been a lot of threads lately on this topic,so here it goes..

The coils for this engine MUST have Saab AND Mitsubishi on them..Cobalt coils won't work..The 2.8 coils are different..

Just add to this,if you get a P1312 DTC even though this related to the ionization module 99% of the time it's the coil/s that are failing or wrong type...

People be gettin crafty!

The Saab and Mitsubishi must be MOLDED INTO THE PLASTIC. THEY MUST LOOK EXACTLY LIKE AEROJON'S PICTURE.

These will not work!

So, where can one find the CORRECT coils for our car for a reasonable price?

-rockauto.com, airtex wells (there is typically a 5% off code around the internet often)
-Auotzone, Duralast (use a coupon code to bring price down. All over the internet)
-Advance Auto, Intermotor (use a coupon code to bring price down. All over the internet)

ALWAYS INSPECT THE COIL BEFORE LEAVING THE STORE. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO PUT CRAPPY CHINESE COILS BACK INTO THE BOX AND KEEP THE GOOD ONE.

Coils known to NOT be correct:

-Proparts brand from Eeuroparts
-most on ebay
-most on amazon
-Beck/Arnley brand from Rockauto

Pretty much, if it comes from China it probably won't work. If the part cross-references with the Cobalt then you know it is no good. This happens often as it is assumed since they both have Ecotec engines that the coils are the same. Well, Trionic8 (Saab's engine management system) relies on the coil for knock data. The Cobalt coil, while looking identical, does not have this capability.

If the coil doesn't look EXACTLY like this (Mitsubishi engraved and SAAB molded into the plastic) it is most assuredly going to cause you problems.

Feel free to gamble on some Amazon or ebay coils. Just be prepared to not get what is pictured as they tend to use stock pictures. Some people have found legitimate coils for good prices (~$60), but that is rare. Don't be surprised if these middlemen start to assume they can't just order that cheaper coil once orders start flooding in since they don't know any better and assume they can increase their margins. It'll happen, I guarantee it.
