The fuel gauge on my SS works only for the first 5 minutes of every drive, no more and then falls down to empty. When it does work it shows the correct level. When it fails the DTE is 0 and the fuel light is on.

When i put fuel system cleaner in the tank, it seems to help for about 24-48hrs.

Any advice on the source of this?

Your fuel sender is bad. Very common problem on our saabs. It is located in the fuel tank. About a $60 part and about $300-$400 labor.
