Default Auto Transmission Fluid Quantity

Hey, I just changed my fluid for the second time in a week (wanted to flush the old stuff out really well) and my question is this. How are you guys measuring how much to pour in? Are you just pour until it overflows or what? Both times I have put in a bit over 3 liters and both times it measures really high on the dipstick, both before and after driving. Should I worry about overfilling? I don't want to blow any seals or anything.

Yes definately worry about over filling its a very bad thing!

Let some out fella

I measured mine in a container at about 3.5 lilres so I put 3 litres in then carefully added until the right level was obtained.

some of the bottles have markings on the side with an opaque layer so that you can see the fluid level. So add 3 liters (3 bottles) and then add exactly 0.5 liters from the forth

Good luck

Yeah, it's odd. I checked it cold tonight and it was WAAY over. So, I drained off perhaps a liter. I ran it for a while, checked it again and had to add at least half a liter. Ran it again, checked it again and had to add a tad more! Weird. But no it is right at the base of the MAX mark. Hope I didn't blow anything up but it was only overfilled for a short time.

A couple of mm below the max when checked correctly is excellent

I'm sure you'll be fine!

Cool, first auto car I've even changed fluid in! I have an auto Honda...uh, I better change the fluid in it, too! 62k miles!

Yeah, I think I got it right now. Since my 9-5 Haynes hasn't come in yet, I dug thru my NG manual to find the auto trans changing procedure.

Hi bkrell - undoubtedly you should follow Chris' advice - as you have done - in order to be safe, but don't lose too much sleep over potentially blowing anything up - mine's been running slightly overfilled for the past 30,000 miles without any evident ill effects.

Forgive me if I end up eating my words next week

Well the dealer billed me for 4 litres when they replaced the fluid in a 66k service. So obviously they poured it all in

Yeah right, and they saved 1/2 litre, they do this 7 times and then charge some poor sod for using up all the 1/2 litres which they have already been paid for

Brian, did you notice any difference with the gearchange after the fluid change? I was startled how different/better the gearchange was.

Same here Kermit, the car shifts oohhh so much smoother now

When I went to change the fluid, I asked him to give me the 1/2 liter because I knew he wasnt going to put it in. Gave me a weird look like I am crazy but hey, I paid for it, I want it my trunk

Ah it's adopting stealth tactics.................until you reach the apex of a sharp bend at full throttle and "it" decides to kick down two gears, momentarily lifting off to change and throwing you sideways into the path of oncoming traffic

Finally here are some pics of the ATF plug location:

The ATF plug is facing the catalytic converter!

You need a 24mm open ended / ring spanner, not enough room for a socket!

Drain and refil is 3.5 litres and you need Dexron III fluid

What about a filter change, did any of you do this when changing the oil in your auto box?

Hope the drain plug is easer to undo than the sump plug

There is no service-able filter on the 9-5 auto boxes
