3 Car manufacturer
4 Product line
5 Model Series
6 Body type
7 Gearbox
8 Engine variant
9 Check character
10 Model year
11 Place of manufacture
12 Serial number

The number is easily found on the centre of the bulkhead, just behind the throttle body, below the wiper fixing.

Use the data on your VIN plate as follows:

1 Geographical area Y = Northern Europe

2 Country S = Sweden

3 Car manufacturer 3 = Saab Automobile AB

4 Product line E = 9-5

E = Saab 9-5 Vector with driver airbag

F = Saab 9-5 Vector with driver and passenger airbag

G = Saab 9-5 Aero with driver airbag

H = Saab 9-5 Aero with driver and passenger airbag

6 Body type 4 = 4-door 5 = 5-door

7 Gearbox 5 = Manual 5-speed 8 = Automatic 4-speed 9 = Automatic 5-speed

8 Engine variant

C = 2.0 t, B205E E = 2.3 t, B235E

G = 23 T, B235R Z = 3.0 t, B308E

D = 2.2 t D223L L = 3.0 t D308L

9 Check character 0-9 or X

10 Model year

W = 1998 X = 1999

Y = 2000 1 = 2001

2 = 2002

11 Place of manufacture 3 = Trollhättan 9 = Trollhättan, preseries

12 Serial number 000001-999999

Question

Looking at a 2004 ARC with the letter A in the eighth space. Do you know what engine variant that would be?

I'm guessing that may be the 220hp 2.3T....the B235L, which is a slightly detuned version of the TD04 equipped B235R Aero engine.

B235E is the light pressure turbo engine with the GT17 turbo

B235L is effectively a B235R Aero engine but with a 'softer' ECU tune, i.e a 220hp Aero engine rather than a 250hp one.

You have a base model, or later called Linear. In 2001 there was no "Linear" yet; the nomenclature was "base" or no extra name, SE (for the V6 version, althought there've been some 4 cyl SE's) and Aero. In 2002 they changed the names to Linear = base, Arc = SE, and kept the Aero.

The 2001 "base" model in the US is not like a stripper version like you see in other parts of the world. From the 2001 press release, these are the additional equipment listed for the SE and Aero.

My 4-cyl is equipped the same (with additional equipment) as the SE V-6 except for the auto-dimming mirror so perhaps mine is one of the 4-cyl SE versions walmark is referring to.

Quote:
STANDARD ON SAAB 9-5 SE MODELS:
In addition to or instead of equipment listed above

3.0-liter 6 cyl turbocharged 200-hp engine
Electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission
16-inch five-spoke light alloy wheels
Classic leather upholstery
3-position memory on driver’s side (incl. mirror settings and tilt- down passenger-side mirror)
Harman/Kardon tuned audio system, radio/CD/cassette, 240w, 9- speakers
Auto-dimming rear view mirror

STANDARD ON SAAB 9-5 AERO MODELS:
In addition to or instead of equipment listed above

2.3-liter 4 cyl high output turbocharged 230-hp engine

Hi Guys

I have a bit of a worry as far as I know my car was first registered in sept 1999.But accoring to the VIN number I have and decoding it with the details in this thread my car was maufactured in 2000 as the 10th charracter is y . As my car was registered in 1999 I though it should be an X. Does anyone have any insight to this

The 1999 LPT was 170hp; Saab had an available upgrade to 200hp by replacing the engine control unit (ECU).
