Default Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

Okay, after looking through the forum and creeping though pages I've found people using several different fluids from Toyota T-IV, Mobil 3309, and OEM Saab fluid.

Which have you used/would you recommend? I need to get this done soon, and want to locate the fluid and buy it.

Also I have a replacement radiator due to a front end collision a July two years ago, the transmission cooling lines are leaking now as of two weeks maybe. Spoke to a Tech at the dealer and he said the replacement radiators (Not OEM) have shorter connections or something of that sort. Going to probably just put this aircraft sealant my father has at his work which they use to seal up stuff on airplanes and airplane parts. Any other suggestions than replacing the radiator?

Any and all input on the topics are welcome

Yeah, that's what I was leaning towards. The cheapest I found so far was $83 shipped. $65 for fluid, $17 for shipping

I use the 3309 fluid. Look at the Consumer Auto Parts web site. http://www.consumerautopartsonline.c...locations.html
It's a parts store and they have several in CT. The ones here in Massachusetts stock the 3309 fluid for about $5 per Qt. Worse case ask them and they maybe can get it from another store.

Compared to what a saab shop will charge you its way better, I asked Taliaferro saab since Im in the same town and they wanted $84 just for 4 quarts then all together they wanted $124.

This site sucks for Saab specific parts. Putting in our vehicles it just shows generic fitment parts--pathetic. I just wasted 5 minutes.
Rock Auto is much better.

Yeah, not great.
But I think it was the best I could do for the Toyota Trans Fluid

The reason that people often opt for the Toyota ATF Type-IV is that it is often well-priced and your local Toyota dealer always has it. I bought a case at my local Toyota parts department for $6.09/qt. So I think it came out to roughly $78 with tax. That and it's JWS 3309 compatible which is what you are looking for.

Called all the local ones i my area within 20 minute drive and none have them and can't get them :/

I did find http://www.lfpowers.com/which is a company that distibutes Mobil products and they can get me a case for $66 but I'll have to wait a week or so. I may just opt for that and wait it out if I can't find anything else. This would be for the Mobil 3309

I don't understand... why not just use Toyota Type IV Fluid? Plenty of members on the forum have used it. It's the only fluid I've used in both my 9-3 and 9-5. And on the 9-3's, the green plastic plug (or measuring stick) that you remove to fill the tranny when performing a drain-n-fill, clearly states, molded right into the plastic: Use Only Type IV Fluid.

It's easy to find, there's always a Toyota dealer somewhere near you and compared to other options, it's cheap!

Sounds like a complete Win-Win scenario to me.

I used the Maxlife ATF. It states its a good replacement for TIV and in one of its FAQ this was noted.

  1. Does MaxLife ATF meet the spec for Volvos with a Geartronic Transmission?
Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc ATF will meet Volvo specifications that require the use of TIV or JWS3309 ATF.
Thats good enough for me. The transmission shifts so smoothly now.

I called my local Toyota dealer before I even started looking at 3309 and they said that they don't even carry it. I'll call another dealership in a little and see what they say

Did you ask for Type IV Fluid or 3309? If you're calling Toyota and asking for 3309 then, yes the response you will get is, "We don't carry it"

Type IV, I know they don't carry 3309 haha

Maybe they misunderstood my question, maybe not. I would assume they would carry it, but the first dealer I called is known for crappy service so that may explain it -____-

Anyways, I'll be purchasing the IV and replacing it this Saturday with a drain and fill. Then a month later probably do it again. Anyone else recommend something else? Around how much usually pours out? I've heard from some people 4 quarts?

Here's the T-IV. $5.95/quart with free shipping over $50. And sometimes you can find promo codes.

Not sure how much drops but you should change it 3 times I believe. That's usually how many times is needed to get all the old fluid out.

I believe it's about 3 litres. Best way is to measure what comes out.
