Default Might be purchasing a 2005 92X Aero

Hello all, it's been a long time since I've posted. I used to own a 1998 NG900 and now am looking at purchasing a 2005 92X Aero with roughly 120,000 miles on it.

I drove it the other day and it drives really nice, no obvious noises, shakes or rattles etc. Transmission was very smooth.

I did notice a little bit of a burning oil smell and when I stopped there was a bit of smoke, obviously the oil burning off from wherever it was leaking but I could not find anything.

#1 - What are some common failures I should look for on this particular car?
#2 - Is there a way to inspect the turbo? are there common issues with the turbo?
#3 - Are these motors known for the head gasket issues like the subaru's?

Thanks for any help!

It's basically a wrx. Wrx forum will be more helpful in my opinion. Not much traffic here.
The answer is almost always....Tech2.
You can either buy one or be a slave to your mechanic/dealer when you need repairs. Your choice.

Never have less than TWO working key fobs.

david having owned a rex since feb '03 i know a lot about these cars! the old girl is up on stands in the garage for now but pending my tax return a new (used jdm) long block is going in.

getting a general idea of where the oil/smoke is coming from is key. there are a few common problem areas/issues but i need something a bit more directional to help. it is highly likely to be coming from the turbo area but could be either a) turbo oil return line or b) half moon camshaft seals on cam covers or c) cam cover gasket.

have a careful look at the nuts on the turbo heatshield and/or downpipe bolts (if the shield is removed). look for signs of them being wrenched recently (shiny metal corners for example). the cars are reliable but also extremely moddable. look around for evidence of mods having been recently removed which may indicate a harder than normal life.

the turbos are very hardy as nearly all oem turbos are. i ran the piss out of mine at 20+ psi for years before i sold it after upgrading. like me, many folks who do mod these cars sell their takeoffs for cheap money, a couple hundred at most. i sold mine to a guy who was going "back to stock" so he could sell his car. at that price point i consider them replaceable wear items.

a turbo swap sounds like a big deal but is a day or less even for a novice shadetree. the only way to inspect the turbo is to pull the downpipe off so you can get a finger or two on the shaft of the turbine to check for play. that's 40% of the work of swapping the turbo out entirely!

the motor IS a subaru motor. however, the subaru motor notorious for HG issues was the phase 1 2.5 block, not the ej205 that is in your potential car.
