Default Race your 900: The 24 Hours of LeMons Oct & Dec 2008

If you've ever wanted to go road-racing on the cheap, the 24 Hours of LeMons is an endurance racing series for cars that cost no more than 500 bucks.

There are two events left in 2008, October 18-19 at MSR Houston in Texas and December 27-28 at Thunderhill in Northern California. Registration for Texas is closed (the race is open to spectators), but there is still time to apply for Thunderhill. Thunderhill applications are due by 10/18.

Entry forms can be found at www.24hoursoflemons.com.

There are lots of Saabs that show upÖwe've even had a couple of 9000s. Here's your excuse to drag that car out from behind the garage!

It is one hell of a great time!

Five friends and I just did the one in Toledo, OH (Detroitish area). We were team Cougar Bait.

We raced my 1991 9000 Turbo.

On the way down:

after a significant brush with the wall that required about 4 hours of down time to get sorted out:

We ended up winning the most heroic fix award, which sits proudly in the same cabinet that my wedding china is kept in

Here is the photo of the car on the way home:

After 40-some laps we hit the wall at over 50mph. It was during our first driver's shift. We were all pretty discouraged, but with the encouragment and help of other teams we were able to get the car going and gain over 20 positions before the motor began to fail.

We finished under checkered flag, but we sat out for almost an hour near the end and lost about 3 positions that we had worked so hard to gain back.

It was honestly one of the most fun things I have EVER done. Anyone who wants to check out my team's experience, it was blogged on culturegarage.com

I highly recommend it. We'll be back next year, I already have a free rolling saab 9000 chassis that many of the parts from this year's car will go into!

Hmmm.. you want people to read your blog about the Saab and yet smack on the front page is:

"Yeah, itís just like that. Apparently, Pontiac will NOT be canceling the G8 and the Solstice. Yet. But letís be realistic, Pontiac, Hummer and Saab are dead brands walking."

Hi, the truth hurts.

I was also very envious of the race team, and I'm glad they did so well.
