Default Where to from here? VM or another laptop?

Well, I was all set up on my old laptop and the internal GPU has called it quits, so not worth fixing I'm told. So I'm back to square 1, trying to get the virtual machine going.
I downloaded it again from the google drive. Unzipped, and tried "open virtual machine" through VMware workstation player 15, and it just shows blank when I browse to the folder.
If I navigate to the folder through windows and double click on the .vmdk file - VMware workstation opens then displays "Error while opening the virtual machine: VMX file is corrupt."

Anyone able to get this going? Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

In the meantime, I'll be browsing classifieds for an antique laptop.

I got another vintage laptop, swapped the hard drive from my busted system in there updated a few drivers and I'm good. That's one thing to like about windows. Programmed a key for the car today.

It would have been nice to have the VM, just to avoid dealing with this old hardware but is what it is.

I removed the VMware because it's been a pita. The file size is big and it seems to get corrupted.
