Modern features
Not all of the features below are Saab innovations of course. But all are features you'd expect to find on a modern car. So you wouldn't get this lot on a car that went on sale in 1968 would you? think again.....
- Disc brakes all round - a lot of cheap and nasty family cars don't have these, even today.
- Overhead cam engine
- Diagonally split dual braking circuit - actually introduced by Saab in 1963
- Ignition key between front seats Introduced on the 99. If you have a crash in your 99, the surgeons won't be extracting a set of keys from your now defunct kneecap. the other car manufacturers were so slow to catch on to this one that the only manufacturer to do so thus far is Range Rover.
- Safe front wheel drive handling
- Headlamp wash/wipe - Introduced in 1971. Later became a legal requirement in Sweden.
- Head restraints - Most Saab 99's have head restraints - Saab had the first integrated into the seat from 1974.
- Self repairing rubber bumpers - Introduced in 1971. The bumpers reform to their original shape at impacts up to 5mph.
- Heated drivers seat - Introduced on all Saabs from 1972.
- Side impact protection bars - Another Saab industry first - standard on the 99 from 1973.
- Turbocharging - 1976, the Saab 99 Turbo becomes the first turbocharged family car in mass production.
