How do you replace the oxygen sensor?

How would you replace the oxygen sensor on a non-turbo model? I've consulted Bentley on the oxygen sensor, but it doesn't seem to give any hints on how you would go about replacing it.

If there's a connector between the O2 sensor and the harness, unplug it. If the wire is spliced, cut it. Put a wrench (I think it's 22mm) on it - turn counter-clockwise - when it's fairly loose (probably after the first .5 revolution) unthread by hand and remove. Put anti-sieze compound on threads of new O2 sensor - thread in by hand (clockwise) until snug - tighten with wrench. If there's a plug on the new O2 sensor and the harness, plug it in. If you had to cut the old one out, splice the new one in and cover the connection (heat shrink tubing, heat shrink tape, standard electrical tape).

I understand the whole procedure that you just outlined SteveTheFolkie. But the area around it is too tight to get a wrench in there. What would I need to remove prior to changing the sensor itself? Can I even remove the oxygen sensor from the engine compartment or do I need to lift the car?

you have the two piece manifold with the y-pipe right? jack up the front right wheel high enough to get a jack stand in there and go after the sensor from under the car. you can save a fair chunk of change if you dont buy a saab sensor.i put one for a ford 302 in our 92 900 for cheap,you just have to do a little splicing.

Yes it is the two piece manifold with the y-pipe. Would it be possible to remove it without having to jack up the car?

Ahh ... I've got an '85 8V .... I could almost put a spare engine in the space on the exhaust side of my ride (it's a non-turbo, no AC, no power steering pump) - I suppose life is a bit different for you 16V guys -

Yeah, I've gotten pretty good at resetting everything quickly just from having to disconnect the battery so many times!

I've taken that elbow off the car and removed the o2 sensor on the workbench/vise. It just seemed easier, especially when the original o2 sensor broke in half on me.

On my '87, the o2 sensor is on the top side of the elbow...I've never seen that before.

When I took the battery off the car to do it, it took about 30 minutes and that's counting splicing in all of the wires (used one that had a different wiring harness) and moving the battery. And it was in my driveway and dark outside.

How much and where do you guys get your O2 sensors from?

if i go to the local auto-zone(u.s. el-cheapo parts emporium) and ask for an o2 sensor for a saab and buy it($148u.s.and well have to order that),it hurts to sit down the next day.if i go there and tell them i want a sensor for a ford 302 or 351 (pick just about any application) they cost about 30 bucks. and i still walk out with a bosch sensor

That might work for the turbo model, but not the non-turbo model. The oxygen sensor is located on the front exhaust pipe on the non-turbo. On the turbo it is located on the exhaust manifold.



Above is a photo of the two piece manifold with the y-pipe, with the oxygen sensor behind a black cylinder shaped object that is blocking me from being able to get a wrench in there. Does anyone know what this is? Power steering pump?
