Hi -
I just purchased a 2000 9.5 I just brought the car home tonight and on my way I stopped by my office for about 2 hours. When I got back in the car I would not start - I turned the key which is on the middle console and nothing. All the lights on the dash lite up but no turn over. Finally it started. I stopped at the store for about 1/2 hour and the same thing happen. It does finally start but seems to take some time to reset. Earlier today I had also stopped and parked the car and it did the same thing, before finally starting. It is almost as if it has to time out or reset before it will start. There is no warranty on this car but I just left the salesman a voice mail telling him that it happen again. They are aware of it because earlier today when it happen I called him and asked if I was doing something wrong. He said I could bring it back on Monday but I just thought if any of you had heard of this type of things. |

Not starting straight away can be 3 things, if no starter turning check the starter ground wire which can loosen and cause this problem. If an auto box it could be the safety neutral switch, try moving the gearlever back and forward a few times to see if it will start eventually. 3rd reason and possibly the favourite is the CPS. (do a search for Crankshaft Position Sensor)
Let us know the outcome when its fixed. |

the cps seems to go bad on all the cars, saab should change them under warrenty at 60,000 miles, it's a weird part, starts when it wants, then doesn't, but most likely this is your problem, same thing happened to me. Do the job yourself, my saab dealer wanted like $400.00 us dollars, it's a $75.00 part and takes maybe an hour to replace.

It does not even turn over or make and sound almost as if everything is DEAD. No cranking sound no ignition type sound NOTHING?
Could the problem still be the CPS? DEAD - then out of no where it seems to reset itself and starts. |

How is you battery? Just because the dash lights come on, does not mean the battery has enough juice to turn it over. Try giving it a jump and see what happens, you have nothing to loose.
Also check for corrosion on the battery wires, I have had that problem as well. If it is heavily corroded it will not let the power through. Get some baking soda and water and pour it on the terminal if it does show signs of corrosion. Last edited by TremmRG1; 18-02-07 at 11:31 PM. |

when my cps went out, the car cranked but it was like it wasn't getting any gas, sounding like a battery problem to me.

If the engine isn't cranking at all, it's not a CPS problem. It's either the automatic gear selector sensor (whatever it's called) or the starter has gone bad. However, ususally when a starter goes bad you will hear a high pitched revving noise, but the engine won't crank.
There are several other things it could be also: -If it is a manual transmission, the clutch sensor could be acting up, and making the car think you do not have the clutch all the way down. -The ignition barrel is fouled up. That would make sense if all it takes is a few tries to get the engine to turn over. The "ON" selection on the ignition lights up all the warning lights, but will not turn over the car just as you described. It wouldn't be the first time an ignition barrel has had to be replaced on one of these cars. My dad even told me a story about his a while back... The ignition barrel and the gear selector sensor are my 2 best bets. |

Therefore, the car is a 59049.

It's not CPS since the starter doesn't spin when the key is turned. Bad CPS will spin the starter but not start. Could also be neutral safety switch. Row the lever back and forth a bit, also try a start in Neutral rather than Park. |

I found a loose nut on the starter and tighten it up. I had the battery checked out and everything else looks good. I did all that on the 21st and to night when I stopped at the store for about 20 minutes and I came back out I hit the remote entry button and got in. Inserted the key, same thing lights go on in the cluster and everything is dead. No nothing. I waited a few minutes after removing and inserting the key several times, hitting the keyless entry lock, unlock, inserted the key, turned it and even moved the gear lever back and forth and no nothing. Waited a few minutes turned the key and it started. I think that it is the starter.
Do you think it could have something to do with the security system? It seems that if I just wait and don't do anything something times out and it starts. |

Check under the drivers side carpet for water. The carpet is rubber backed, so you have to lift the carpet to get under it. The Twice unit sits under the drivers seat carpet and this controls the alarm and immobilizer. You might have to get this reprogrammed. Or it might be your ignition cylinder. You should probably take it to the dealer to diagnose.....that hurt to say. Then, if it's something you can repair, great!
