Default Considering trading in my 04 Aero for an 07 9-5 Aero

Hi everyone,

I'm considering selling/trading in my 04 Aero and buying an 07. I really don't have anything bad to say about the 04. It was thankfully reliable as clock!....although the suspension was way too soft. Even with Pirelli P-Zero Rossos and upgrading to Koni sports didn't help the Yaw/squirm. Would like to hear opinions of anyone with an 06 or 07 Aero in terms of the car's performance, handling and fuel economy. When I drive my 04 conservatively--60ish mph on a hi-way, I can get 32.6 mpg calculated. The display shows even better.

Also looking to compare the manual transmission gearing ratios. I think (not sure) Saab has lowered (numerically higher) the gearing ratios from 04 to 07 Can anyone help here?

Robert

Hi,

I picked up a 2006 95 in November, basically the 06 and 07 are all Aero versions, 235R engines w/HOT. As far as options if you go with the sport package as I did, the suspension is lowered 10mm. It is tighter than the regular suspension, I tested both, I suggest you try them also.

I haven't really compared the gear ratios yet, I'm still at just over 3K km.
Fuel consuption is averaging 15 L/100km city, and 10 L/100km highway.
Just about broken-in, so fuel consumption should start getting better.

I'm looking at the specifications of the '07 9-5 manual transmission, and it looks like the gear ratios are identical to pre-2007 9-5's:

www.saabusa.com is a very useful resource!

Thanks for the specs! Are you running an auto or manual trans?

Thanks for the specs on the 07! I did some basic calculations...It appears Saab did change the gearing ratios ... Damn!

Can anyone supply specs for the 04 with a manual trannie?. Believe it or not I can't find it in my manual. All I can find is a general spec of 27-29 mph @ 1000 rpms in 5th gear.

Well...it looks like I'm wrong about this. I read the specs from the link you provided and they are the same as the 2007. Looking at the specs in the Haynes Service/Repair manual (1997-2004), it shows the gearing ratio as follows:

Haynes
1st............3.38:1
2nd...........1.76:1
3rd............1.12:1
4th............0.89:1
5th............0.70:1
Reverse......3.17:1
Final Drive...3.61:1

It shows 3rd, 5th and Final drive to have different ratios. I realize the manual is geared...no pun intended...around the English and right side steering Euro-spec car but I assumed the tranny was the same....I guess not!!?

Well thanks for the research. I appreciate you looking into this for me! Guess I'm gonna have to take the car out for an extensive test drive and check the tach/speedo!

Regards!

Robert

Bob,

As the owner of an '06 aero, and having had experience of driving older 95s as loaners.... the '06 is very different. powerful, and a true joy to drive.

highways, when cruising, we do get over 30mpg, but locally is not quite there. handling is sure, and quick.

is it like driving a Cooper Mini S? no... but it is vastly improved from the '04 and '05 95s I got as loaners.

Hi,
It's a manual tranny.
As with other Aero spec Saabs, I'm guessing the tranny is matched, or spec'd for the higher power.
On my old 9000 cse, dropping in an aero tranny made quite a difference on the power delivered to the wheels, but of course if you push it will drink.

Thanks for getting back to me. Heading over to the dealer straight from work.

I'm gonna check out the 07's detailing and see if I can get further details on the Anniversary Ed. Hope to order by the middle of February

I'll just chime in and say that I love my '06 9-5 as well. I moved up from a 2003 Saab 9-3 Linear. I do not have the sport package, but I am very impressed with the 9-5's handling even though everything I read said that it couldn't compare to the 9-3 SS.

Good luck!

No contest, IMHO, the 04’ front end is soooo aggressive looking where as the 07’ just looks straight GM fragmentation (to me) And what’s all this talk about lower gear ratios as compared to an 04 I mean what exactly are you trying to achieve? Is your 04’ too slow for you As I’m sure you are aware, there’s lot’s that can be done to make it faster or handle better. I would wait for the ALL NEW 9-5 in a couple of years. The 07’ is just a “re-do”.

I think I heard a rumor that the "all-new" 9-5 will have an AWD option also! That's a pretty cool change in my opinion...

I went over to the one in Yonkers, Beck Chevrolet/Saab. Dealer didn't have a good selection on the floor 'thou I did get to see 'Ice Blue'. I like it! I think it might look better on a 9-3 but have to see it during the day and on the 9-5 to make that decision.

gonna stop in on 2 more dealers on in Katonah and on in Greeenwich. See if I can get a test drive in a 9-5 w/ a sport package and 5-speed. No decisions yet!

Keep ya posted.

Can't argue with the look. I prefer the 04's dash and instrument cluster over the 07. Overall its the same body with just a bunch of chrome...hate chrome. I like the 07's radio and AC control layout better.

I heard Saab updated the suspension on the newer Aero's both the dampers and sway bars but really don't know to what degree.

My concern over gearing ratios is I like hi torque @ low rev's. I've already gone thru this with my old 900's. I went from an 84 900 T to a 93 900 turbo Comm. Ed. The Saab engineers decided to 'tweek' the gearing (maybe combined with the Red box --185 Hp to make it quicker the the base turbo...who knows) enough that the car was now reving about 600 rpm's higher at the same speed and gear. The result was increased fuel consumption, a more noticable secondary harmonic drone, not to mention more wear and tear on the power train more frequent oil changes. I kept looking to shift up to another gear! Yeah I know, I got better performance.... but I have an 06 C6 vette for hi-performance.

The ratios on my 04 are perfect for me. When I'm crusing on back roads at 60ish the car is reving at about 2k in 5th. I have plenty of torque to get up and around the hills going to the Green Mountains and fuel economy is around 33 mpg calculated.

i was at the dealer yesterday and had another chance to poke around a few of the 07 9-5s they had on the lot. the interior has really grown on me, the layout is pretty good and has a nice look/feel to the materials. the exterior is another story as the front end, IMO, is completely color sensitive. it's ok on grey or lighter colored cars but on darker colored cars it just looks gaudy to me.

they had an 04 aero the same color as mine (steel grey) on the lot, and imo that is the best front end ever put on any saab to date. if they could put the 07 interior in the 04 aero body that would be the perfect saab imo.
