Unhappy Saab 95 2.3t auto - engine cut out

Can anyone help me to understand the problem I have with my 2003 Saab 95 2.3t auto. It simply cut out when on the motorway last night. I had to pull into the hard shoulder and get a tow. The engine rotates but no ignitiion at all. I checked all the fuses associated with engine management and they're fine. I don't want to get Saab involved unless I have to so if anyone's got a clue I'd appreciate it

Most likely your Direct Ignition Cartridge (DIC) has gone bad. This provides the power to the spark plugs. May also be the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) when provides information to computer when to fire the spark.

The DIC is ~$190/US and CPS ~ $40/US and both available from eeuroparts. There are many many threads on these two subjects since they tend to fail quite often on these cars. Search these forums for more info.

It always helps if you can get it diagnosed since throwing money at possible problems can get expensive if you don't get lucky.

You could have an independent service bring up the fault the code. Then pull the #17 ECU fuse. If it isn't the DIC, your car's ECU is probably in limp home mode. Pulling the fuse for 15 seconds or so will reset the computer. I'm guessing you have a bad throttle body sensor. If you want to try just pulling the fuse, go ahead. Worst case, it doesn't work and the code shows up again. Then you can pay the money to have the code read.
