Default Mp3 Cd

I just leased a 2006 9-3 Combi with Infotainment system, 6-CD in-dash. Will this play MP3 cd's? I haven't been able to so far, although material I read first indicated MP3 cd's would work. Is there a particular type of CD format I need to use?

unless the 2006 models state you can play mp3, i dont think you can do mp3. only audio (.wav etc...) files burned as an audio cd can be played.

The CD players in 2007 models are supposed to play mp3's. That's the rumor.

I have played a mixed CD in my 06 that was created on a computer by pulling individual songs off of other discs - I know they are not wave files but it was made quite some time ago but I believe they were MP3's. I thought someone posted pics of their stereo displaying the track titles from a burned cd that was mp3's - and said that is the only way you can get the track titles unless the disc is a modern day created by Sony or something - if you have not tried another disc I would do so.

The 6-disc changer supports CD-Text. In fact it says so right on the front.

Cd-text is rarely employed on major label releases. But it is easy to burn Cd-r's with text enabled. You may need to type in your own titles. If you convert mp3's to cda many programs will transfer part of the ID3 tag to Cd-text. You can't trust this to be useful though.

Since the Saab display only shows about 20 characters horizontally (and does not scroll) I always check my titles before burning. Otherwise you end up seeing row after row of "Supergroup - Megahits -"

I guess the various replies mean that MP3 is not directly supported on the 2006 model. Am I correct that cda will only give you about a dozen or so songs per CD, since cda are uncompressed files?

A blank 700mb cd will hold 18-20 tracks on average, obviously depending on the length of each track. Doesn't matter if you use mp3, wma, wav, cda, etc if they are burnt to make a standard cd, using a program such as Nero, they are converted from whatever their source to standard cd music files during the burn process. If mp3s, wavs, etc are burnt to a disk in their original format the disk them becomes a data disc, where the data stored is in the form of compressed music files. It is this compression that requires specific software/firmware in the player to decode it and play it. A 700mb disk can hold around 7-10 complete albums if the files are burnt directly as mp3s, this gives an idea of the compression involved.
As stated in previous posts, I believe that pre 2007 models cannot play cds that contain mp3 files, but the new system in the 2007 range can.
Steve.
