Default Premium gas in 2.3t Linear

I've been using Premium in my 2002 2.3t Linear. Do you think this is best ?

Depends what RON is the 'Premium' in your country. In NZ we have (all unleaded) Unleaded 91, Premium 96 ('older' cars?) and Ultimate 98 (BP). I only feed my 2000 model 2.0 LPT with the most expensive 98 as unlike in my 1999 9-3 2.0 LPT (bigger but slower spooling turbo) now I can really tell the difference between 91 vs 98.

Stupid petrol prices , where is the Ethanol BioPower 9-5 ?! Or the all electric (?) 9-3 conv?. It's gonna be a long wait... at least for us down under.

The car is designed to run on premium. It can be run on normal gas as well, but the computer detunes the engine, so you get reduced performance and gas mileage, making the few dollars difference not worth it in the end.

i believe only the 2.3 HOT and 3.0t engines require premium octane in order to deliver the advertised hp/tq and fuel efficiency.

the 2.3 lpt is spec'd for regular octane. even though you might not see any benefit with premium in the lpt engines it's up to you really.

The Average Octane Number recommended in the 2002 manual suggests 90 AON for Linears, but since we don't have 90 AON in California, I use 91. 87 AON is the minimum recommended.

As B~P said, only the Aero and V6 models are spec'd for premium gas, all the lpt models run standard gas.

What I think everyone meant to say is that the engine is designed to run on all grades of fuel ... the ECU takes the fuel grade into account and adjusts the timing accordingly.
It runs just fine on the lowest grade ... however, it gets full power and fuel economy when running on premium.

I have been running my 9-5 on Sunoco 94 octane since the day I got it and have no intention of going down a grade ...

Default Premium Gas In a 3.0T Arc Wagon

Since I purchased my 02 Arc wagon I switched from running 93 octane to 87 octane just to see what it would happen.

1. Increased milage with the 87 oct. from chevron (From 28 to 31mpg Hwy)
2. Slight decrease in performance, engine will compensate for the octane, still enough performance that it makes people angry when a wagon blows their doors off.

I asked my deal and independent mechanic how it effect the car, both said that with the cleaners that they put in at the time of service, their would not be any problems. They also said when you switch do it on as close to empty as possible.

I'm running mine on a mid-grade (octane 89), I'm getting between 32mpg to 34mpg depending on driving conditions, driving style and where I buy the gasoline.

I'm in Charlotte, NC as well and I run Shell 93 in the summers and the 89 in the winters. Considering running 89 all the time, just been too lazy to try it and note the performance difference. I'm too scared to run 87. I don't want to loose that "hey we just got blown away by a wagon look..."
