I was at a rally today for the local newspaper that's going under some turmoil (Santa Barbara News-Press, anyone heard anything about it lately?) and the guy with the mic kept saying how warm it was. It was really 80 degrees but with something like 90% humidity. And there was a 30% chance of thunderstorms today, though nothing happened. It sucks. Even the beach sucks. I've got to get out of here.

Wanna hear something ironic? In my hometown John Goodman is filming a movie called "The Year Without Christmas." They had thousands of walk-on extras wearing coats and sweaters in fake plastic and soap bubble "snow" to simulate our annual Christmas Festival. Even my 93 year old grandfather took part.

Needless to say, the not-so svelte Goodman had to be treated for heat exhaustion after wearing a full Santa outfit from mid-day to 12:30 am.

And Natchitoches (my hometown) is 70 miles closer to the coast than where I live now and has ONLY been hitting 97-98 degrees.

Yeah it was really hot today in SB. The News Press I guess ran out of staff (lol). They kept coming by our front door trying to get us to buy a subscription but we don't read the paper--I don't much care. I went to the beach and the tide was too high, almost no sand left, it was foggy, and of course the predicted rain/thunderstorms never happened.

Can I ask everyone a favor?

Please be careful w/ your cigarette butts/camp fires/leaf piles. We (US Forest Service) are starting to get plucked left and right to go fight wildfires. I just lost my lone arch. technician assisting me w/ my digging so he could help with a fire west of Ft. Worth.

Fixed.

The fire hazard is a bit crazy, can't go for a hike on any trail in New Mexico anymore, they are all shut down. Guess I'll have to wait for winter.

Well maybe for Houston is normal to have 100+ degrees fahrenheit but in the UK its not normal at all

Here in Scotland all you see is red arms and burnt noses, everybody love the heat but this temperature would kill alot of the older people am sure.

Global warming is not looking good for people in the UK, esp when water is not in great supply.

/off topic rant/

Can I ask everyone to use their ashtrays?
That is what they are for afterall ...
If you choose to smoke in your car, then use the facilities that exist in your car.

For anyone to use a public space to flick their ashes or butt out on is not only rude, but you are polluting!

I can't count the number of times I see people doing this with absolutely no regard for the mess they are making and the damage they are doing (back to Brian's forest fire comment).
Not to mention the example they are setting for everyone else around them including kids ...
Tell a 5 year old what the difference is between throwing a butt out the window and throwing their drinking box out the window ...
There isn't one!
The sooner we can get that through our heads, the sooner we can clean up the world we live in!

/rant over/

I took a picture of my SID the other day (can't find the cable to connect my phone to the PC) and it read 101F!

The ACC system kept me nice and comfortable though!

haha. The other night our power went out, which means no AC.

We live on the third floor of an apartment and it got very hot. One of my roomates actually slept out on the balcony on an air mattress!

Just been out to the car (first time out of the server room since 9am!!) showing 39 degrees (102f) in the shade.... I can believe it too - I was in Tunisia a couple of months back and the heat hit me the same just now as it did when I went to Tunis - 40 degrees there.... hits you like a wall when you have been sat in a room at 18 degrees(64f) all morning.... very nice though...

I don't know about the very nice part....

I wish I could live somewhere that was like 18C and 25C (65-75F or so?) all year round. Maybe San Diego?

I don't think I'd do well with the laid back California atmosphere though.

I actually like the fact that while on public transportation in Boston if you talk to a stranger they look at you as if you have two heads. You might even get a "Do I know you?" as a response!

Nope, I'll just have to stay in New England.

wierdly i have discovered that i am the exact opposite - i hate between 20 and 30 - its just not the 'right' kind of hot for my wierd british constitution!!

i was kinda dreading going to tunisia knowing the temperatures it was likely to get to, way above 'normal' british temps.... anyway i absolutely loved it... as a result i figure i need to live in a desert or the arctic!!!

then again its all horses for courses...... looking forward to heading to the middle east in a couple of months though!!

Well, if it makes anyone feel any better, I'm going skiing tomorrow.
Get up early, when it's still dark. Have a hearty breakfast of tonights roast potatoes. Refried with eggs, bacon, toast and coffee in the morning.
Strap on a pair of Volkl super sport 5 stars, and hit the fresh powder.
I started skiing when I was 3 yrs, and it's still as exiting now, as when I started.
I've stopped weeing in my pants though.

I hate you. I've been skiing almost all my life and its something that is very much a part of me, and my winters are devoted as much as possible to it. I can't ski until next winter so I'm trying to get it out of my mind but its hard

Currently, I'm in france where there is no air conditioning, how terrible. its been 98 for the past few days and well, I got sick because of the heat, terrible fever, sore throat, just awful. damn this heat. and you and your skiing, oh just shut up, please!

It is 103F with a heat index of 113F. Humidity is lower but you can't tell it, you still feel as if you need a machete to cut a path through it.

I went outside and worked on a fence for a while. Probably no more than 30 minutes later my clothes were literally soaked, I looked as if I had just jumped in a pool of water. Sweat just dripped off constantly and my clothes were dripping water off as well, you couldn't see for all the water running down your face.

The cars don't like the heat either, they feel like hot slugs. I was out in ol'blue yesterday with the A/C on high when I noticed it was running far too hot. I panicked and shut off the A/C and put the heater on high. I was on the highway in the middle of nowhere and I didn't want to pull off. I knew it had water when I left so I figured having the A/C on during such a hot day just overtaxed it. Three or four miles down the road with the heater on full blast in 100+ deg weather and little change in the tempature if finally occured to me to smack the dash upon which the gauge promptly fell down to where it usually sits. I'd just driven three or four miles with the heater on full in 100+ weather for nothing. I looked like a baked potato, and the gauge was just stuck. My car is trying to kill me.

How is everybody else doing?

And sombody club cuba for teasing us all like that.

Did I use enough smileys? Nope, I think I have room for one more.

Cheers and keep cool,

Heat index of 105ş today, not sure what the humidity was. I just know it was plenty humid while installing an irrigation system and grading the yard.

Not a fun time to work out of doors, but the money is good, and great job security, market is booming here, so I go for it.
