Theoretically it should fit because the 2.0 and 2.3 liter engines use the same block. The 2.3 l engine was used in the normally aspirated 900, minus the turbo of course, and is the same engine that the Viggen has. There are probably differences in wiring harnesses, engine mounts, and other minor things that would probably make it difficult. Besides, with a chip and a few minor upgrades, you can easily get a 2.0 l turbo engine to put out more power than the 2.3, especially if you can get the 2.3 l engine's Mitsubishi TD04 turbo. It bolts right up.

Thanks for your very helpful info.
So you say stick with 2.0L and change the turbo and this should bring it up to approx 230 HP?(with td04)

Upgrading the turbo is a little on the expensive side, so if all you're looking for is 230 hp, I'd go with an air filter, exhaust, and a new ECU. If you want to go over 300 hp, then you'll need the turbo. Taliaferro Saab in the US has a upgrade for $857 US that will give you 229 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. A Viggen intercooler for $300 would probably give you another 10 hp. You can see the specs here: http://www.genuinesaab.com/tuning/pu/PU221.htm

I noticed that you said that the 2.0L and the 2.3L engines have the same block, does this mean that you can simply bore out the 2.0L (and use 9000 aero pistons, etc.) intead of paying for a whole engine? (I have a 1995 900se turbo)

I'm not completly sure but I think the 2.3 is just a stroked 2.0. So i imagine you can just get the crank, rods, and pistons and not do anything to the block.

Just got back from vacation and I had time to confirm that the 2.3 is a stroked 2.0.

bore/stroke in mm
2.0 - 90/78
2.3 - 90/90
