Import Tax

I'm getting some parts from the USA, only a small parcel, probably in a jiffy envelope. Thing is the seller can't declare them as a gift so that I can avoid import tax, but they want to know what value they should put on the package( they are trying to help out!).
Does anyone know what the valuation threshold is to avoid import tax?

andy check out royal mail site it may help. i bought some dewalt stuff cost £36 in tax and handling. as low as possible but if insured it may cause a problem

did that, but seems they didn't bother, so the injectors arrived today and I got stung for £28 VAT and £12 ParcelForce handling fee(WTF ), but no import duty. Oh well the black 630cc injectors are still loads cheaper than the Green giants were when I got them.

I got stung over £100 recently on $800 of stuff I got hit for import duty and vat on that one.

Have you got through to Parcelforce on the phone to pay the fees? It took me weeks to get through to them as they never answer the phone. I emailed their customer services and they never answered. A few days before they were due to send my item back, I managed to get through. I must have been on hold for 7-8 hours over dozens of phone calls.

Always write parcel force cheques - they are really poor at cashing them, I think the drivers just leave them in the cabs. Personally I also wonder how much of the cash fails to make it's way back to the depots.

Duty depends on what it is

some stuff has no duty but most things are around 5 %

Its the VAT that has the sting....
