alright, well, first off, i'm new here, i'm mike, i'm 16, and i just bought a 1987 900 turbo, got a pretty good deal for it, or so i thought... the car was $400, runs great, no rust, i'm the third owner, first owner garage kept it, the second owner didn't drive it too much, he just needed it until he could get another car... it has about 110k miles, not sure (odometer broke at 666XX miles), and went to get it inspected... bad news... it needs a new left headlight mount, left front turn signal, new sway bar bushings, new exhaust, and the "right front wheel shifts upon stopping in reverse, possibly tortion bar arm or control arm"... oh yah, and the power steering pump is "faulty"... and i was just wondering if you guys know any good sites to get any of these parts for cheap, seeing as i'm in debt as it is (parents paid for it, i'm paying them back as i get the money)
thanks, mike |

hey welcome to saab central!
excellent choice at 16 to buy such a great car(or any age for that matter), i'm 18 and own a nice 900 turbo, my first car i owned and drove was a saab, i will never go back.-one thing for sure, the chicks love saab~! -yours sounds like a typical 900, if your tranny shifts well and the engine runs smooth and quiet your in good shape, the no rust is very important too! all your matters can be sorted over time. i would get a used power steering pump as they aren't common to fail and yours prob went bad when it was operated low on fluid, prob becuase you have power steering leaks, watch your leaks carefully, keep her topped up. as long as you have power steering now it doesn't need ot be done right this second, start sourcing one out at a wrecker and install yourself, also if you pull it out of a car in a wreckyard any mistakes (dings, scrapes, lost bolts) can be avoided when you do it in your car becuase you learn what you did wrong.-BUY THE BENTLEY REAPIR MANUAL FOR THE 16V SAAB 900! LIFESAVER and will pay for itself over and over! source out a good mechanic who knows saabs, this is important and get them to check the car out, there are many issues that are considered "normal" to the saab 900, and its good to have a saab guy know your car. you will learn what i mean! as said above eeuroparts.com is a great place to get parts from, cheapest hands down. watch cheap aftermarket parts!!-not such a great idea. good luck, sounds like a good deal, you have to post pictures now!

The Bentley is definitely worth getting - it seems expensive but will save you $$$ in repair bills. With the idling situation, it could be lot of things, but is most likely to be a vacuum leak somewhere. We've started an FAQ here with some of the most common questions, and there are some good links there on idle issues. It looks in good condition judging by the pics.
Welcome to Saab Central

yah... though its neither of those... it idles fine, but randomly (within about 10-30 seconds between each) dips to 0 and starts itself back up again

Automatic Idle Control valve. You can clean them out with carb cleaner and rinse with WD40. Details here:

ouch... lol, though mine is in good condition *knock on wood* hopefully nothing like that happens... not till i have completely paid for it, cuz my parents "own" it, so they decide what happens, so if something else broke, mom would probably just have it junked and say "oh well"

Mike, I wish the body on the 900 turbo I just bought for $1000 looked as pretty as yours. You got a great deal on a project car to learn on as you fix up!
