Default Courtesy Lighting

My 2004 Linear late build has the under door lighting/front foot well lighting de-contented. I would really like to have that back. I see the knock outs under the door. I dont know if the wiring harnesses are behind them. Does anyone know if this de-contenting happened to all models or just the Linear? Does anyone know about the wiring harnesses or the part numbers for the actual light parts? Viscouse, you wouldn't happen to have this knowledge in your back pocket, would you?

I thought I got em all by gum.

There's a new one on me. I can probably find what you're looking for.

You'll need to see if there is any wiring in the knockouts (I assume it's just a plate covering the hole?). If so, whoohoo!
If not, you'll need to take the door panel off to try & wire it.

I'd help you, but the gorillas at my dealer used extreme measures to put my door panel back on, and I can't get it off anymore without ruining the screw (not doing that till after warranty runs out).

Don't you want to do it BEFORE the warranty runs out? I have the Panel removal tool which I haven't used yet, this is probably a good opportunity...

I would like to add them "back" too. Keep us posted on your findings. There is a knotch or imprint in the material where the light is supposed to be. Sort of like a perferated line on a piece of paper.

Can one of you lucky folks with the lights look in the footwell(under the glove box) and tell me generally where the light is mounted under there. I just wonder if there is a knockout under there also, like the underside of the door has. If its easy to see the connector under there let me know that too and I will check mine

Thanks!

Check this out:
www.mrandmrs-g.net/SGFOG/item-f22.htm

I'm probably the only one who takes apart their car & doesn't clean it when I do. If I did it might be close to the level of cleanliness of finklejag's beautiful Cosmic.

So in return for the pics, please keep the filthy car comment to yourselves.
And yep, I colored in the lights so you could see em better.

Viscouse

I've been poking around that website. It's going to be great, look forward to when it's complete. Keep up the great work.

btw - Did you color the lights on the photos with PS or are your lights actually green in the car? Sorry if it's a really dumb question, but I guess it'd go with the rest of the green luminescence of the interior.
Thanks

Viscouse,
Great website! It is really going to be some kind of masterpiece when you are done! You are well on your way... I just went down to the garage (11pm, wife rolling eyes) to verify the footwell knock outs, and sure enough they are there ready to go. I will have to spend some time this weekend figuring out where/if there is a plug in for them... If I were to bet I would say that there is an empty connector just waiting. If everything was there for the locking gas filler door surely these will be there too. I will take pictures and send to you for your web site.
By the way the link to the removing door panel is broken...

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm 34% done. I'm just slowly adding to it here & there.

Sorry about the link. Stupid server freaks out with spaces in the filenames. I'll fix it tonight.

If you don't have a wire/connector there, I'll rip my door off & see where they're supposed to go.

Check this thread out for more details on how to remove the door:

the lights are in fact green LEDs. I replaced a few key interior lights to go along with the green theme. I wanted it to look like they're supposed to be there. It's neat cause it makes people wonder. It doesn't look like it's supposed to be there (cause normal interior lights are white because their purpose it to illuminate things, not color things), but at the same time you can't help but wonder, cause all the other instrumentation lighting is green.

I replaced the dome lights (not reading lights) in front & back, and the footwell lights.

I was thinking about doing the footwell in green and the under door light in white.

Are there lights on the 2003 underside of Rear door too or just the fronts?

I looked as well, thinking the same thing when I took the pictures. No there are not. No lights, no cutouts, nothing. At least on mine.

Viscouse,

Just to clarify, the under door lamp/housing and footwell lamp/housing are the same part number? Secondly, where did you get the green bulbs? As always, thanks.

Yep, same part number.

As for what I used:
http://superbrightleds.com/specs/festoon.htm
P/N 4410-G9 which is 44mm long.
The actual bulb is 43mm long.

They are just a bit longer, but with a little convincing they will fit.
They are LEDs, so they don't do the nice polite fading of incandescencts, but oh well.

I ordered my 4 courtesy lights from GenuineSaab which came in last week. I finally have time to install them. My plan was one light a day after work. I wanted to start with the easiest one, the under the glove box light. Unfortunately the lights are just the lights/bulbs but no wiring connector. I was hoping to find a wiring harness tucked in near the light cut-out... nothing. Does someone out there have a diagram or similar showing the part number for a wiring harness or the location where the light would get its power from? This may not be as easy as I had hoped. Viscouse do you some more magic for me.

I pulled the cover plate off by loosening 1 screw. Bad news is, the wire appears to go behind the glovebox (which is not hard to remove).

But I have a funny feeling it's going to be harder than you think to wire. The wires aren't just part of the standard 12 volt-ground loop. I think both wires come from special places.
I'll see if I can dig up a wiring diagram. If this weekend chooses to cooperate weatherwise, I'll take out the glovebox & see what else I can find.

Thanks for poking around. I took my glove box out, and like you said its pretty easy, but unfortunately there was nothing there to plug into. From your picture I see the little orange and black wires that plug into the lamp hopefully the other end has a place to plug into. I am worried what you may find is that these wires disappear into a bundle of more wires and that there is NO connector... I will keep my fingers crossed though. Don't knock yourself out on this Viscouse, I wont be around this weekend anyway. The wife and I are taking the SAAB on a road trip to S. Colorado and N. New Mexico. have asked her to keep a trip diary with mpg etc. This is the first extended trip this car has been on. Enjoy the long weekend.

I'm almost positive that it does go into a bundle of wires. There's no connector for this. Also, if what I see is right, the source of the wires are the connectors behind the steering wheel, and they're (I think) dedicated. So I don't even think there's a wire you can tap.
Then again...

Here's a legend:
613FL: connector for driver's floor lamp (left side)
613FR: connector for passenger's floor lamp (right side)
J66: a crimp
J65: a crimp
707: The Body Control Module, near the fuse box in dashboard
H102-1: the 102-pin connector under the left A-pillar
701: Rear electrical center
685F: Front roof console light

So here's more info than anyone wanted to know, but since I'm on this path, might as well finish it.

If you look at 613, you can see it is fed by 707 & 701. There is only 1 connector in that path, and I don't know how to get to it. Which means if you want to plug it in per spec, you'd have to find these 2 connectors & run wires from connector 707 (dash fusebox) pin 19 to both lights, and 701 pin 9 in connector B (trunk) to both lights.
That's a lot of wire for 2 lights, but doable. Now the only hard part is figuring out how to get to the connector 707.

Looking at the diagram, another idea occurs. The floor lights behave exactly the same as the overhead dome light. Operable by the dome switch to on/off/door, and when in door mode, they fade on, then wait after a set time to fade off. They act exactly the same. So why not tap into that circuit? You should be able to tap into the black & green/red wires with no probem. From then you only have to run wires from the roof, down the A-pillars to the lights. Not hard at all. The only thing I wonder about is if the circuit has enough juice to run all the bulbs as there's 2 additional loads.

So...how handy are you with a soldering iron?

You could always go to 4 LED's, or 2 bulbs + 2 LED's. Need to know the draw of these devices.

Viscouse,
What were the specs of the green LED's you used for the puddle lights? And did you use series resistors to get the voltage right? LED lifespan will be drastically shortened if the voltage is too high.
