Default dire fuel economy & check engine light

Hi,

I have just aquired a 93/9000CSE 2.3L non-turbo, when. The fuel economy seems dire (15-20mpg at best) and the check engine light is on and sometimes it race's on idle (200rpm upto 1700rpm and back down, etc...)

It didn't do any of this when I tested the car two weeks ago! Any idea what might be the problem (I have a 94/2.0 turbo CSE for spare parts, like sensors)..?

Thanks-in-advance

I would guess it's a Trionic car? If so, try turning the ignition on but not starting the engine. The Check Engine Light (CEL) should flash a fault code at you. You can get a list of flash codes here.

I think the idle problems are symptoms of a rich mixture. Does the car smell rich? It would explain the fuel consumption.

It could be MAP sensor, air intake temp sensor, coolant temp sensor or lambda sensor, among others.

Let us know the flash codes for more advice!

There is no mention of Trionic under the bonnet/hood. Just "2.3 direct ignition".

I have followed the instructions to read out a fault code using the CEL - nothing doing, light comes on and then goes off. Ofcourse when the car is started it stays on and the idle oscillates slowly and with decreasing amplitude until it settles.

I also disconnected the battery for a bit to let the ECU clear any 'fault' (suggested by Giles @ Abbott, they happen to be a few miles away), still no joy - Giles suggested it might be the lambda sensor, anybody experience of this fault or changing a lambda sensor?

I have a 'spare' '94 9000 2.0L turbo that I could rob the sensor off - assuming they are the same sensor...
