Default GM Global 2.8L V6

Is it weird that all V6s ever used in Saabs came from places that have "Port" in their names ? 2.5L V6 (NG900) & 3.0L V6 (9000) came from Ellesmere Port, now the new 2.8L from Port Melbourne.

Here's another song for Saab's new ad campaign: "We Are Family" [Pointer Sisters] ........

February 16, 2005 GM announces new turbocharged 2.8 litre V-6 engine

Detroit, Michigan - General Motors announced a new 2.8 litre turbocharged V6 engine, the third variant of their global V-6 family. Engineers from GM Powertrain in North America and FGP - the Europe-based Fiat-General Motors Powertrain consortium - as well as Australian-based Holden collaborated on the development.

The 2.8L V-6 Turbo debuts in the Aero models of the all-new Saab 9-3 SportCombi, Sport Sedan and Convertible. Technology such as a twin-scroll turbocharger and variable intake valve timing helps the 2.8L V-6 Turbo achieve 250 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque in the 9-3.

"The 2.8L V-6 Turbo has a strong, linear feel that gives the impression of a larger-displacement engine," said Tim Cyrus, global V-6 chief engineer. "The feeling of power is tremendous, but so is the smoothness and refinement built into the engine."

The global V-6 engine family also includes a 2.8L V-6 VVT normally aspirated version which debuted in the 2005 Cadillac CTS, as well as a 3.6L V-6 VVT version that also is available in the CTS. The 3.6L V-6 VVT also is available in the 2005 Cadillac STS and SRX, as well as the Buick Rendezvous and LaCrosse. It is available under the Alloytec brand name in the 2005 Holden Commodore, Calais, Berlina short wheelbase, Statesman and Caprice long wheelbase, Ute, Cab Chassis and Crewman. All use variable valve timing for optimal performance and emissions control.

The 2.8L V-6 Turbo is built at Holden's Port Melbourne, Australia facility, along with 3.6L variants of the global V-6.

take a look at the ECU section, the Motronic ME9, the shape and the position it is like the Saab Trionic8, it seems they based on the Trionic location and capability to support high temperatures and vibrations.

Also the "torque control" it is how it works the Trionic of Saab and the base of his work.

greetings

250 hp and 258lb-ft of torque, that's not all that impressive from a turboed 2.8. The 2.3L HO 4 cyl makes that now, why don't they just dump that one in the 9-3 if they really want to give it more power.

However this means great things for the 9-5, cause they wouldn't want to dwarf their top of the line model. What is the future of the 9-5 aero? 300hp perhaps? All wheel drive of so kind maybe? This could be interesting.

Default Further reading on 2.8L V6

From the redinterior Saab weblog .... insightful info.

My own suspicion is the 3.6L V6 VVT as mentioned will find itself under the hood of the next-gen 9-5 but with forced induction, driving an AWD drivetrain. OK I admit it's my wish more than suspicion

Indeed, the Renault Alpine A610 Turbo was making 250 hp back in 1991 with a 3.0 and single Garrett T3, and that V6 was a 12 valve; Why don't they tune this new 2.8 to 300 hp to begin with?

1. No comparison can be done solely based on hp(unless kindergarten age)
2. Relationship to 9-5 flagship and FWD
