Unhappy Shocks

I tried using a nut cracker that I got from Sears but a single nut was too skinny to work. SO I put the other nut back on and gave it a shot. It seemed to work, but now I can't get the cracked nut off. So now I'm going to try and grind it off from underneath...any suggestions?

Thanks!

Dustin

Are you taking the shocks off?

Gather this is a shock “issue” from the thread header…

Fronts? Rears?

Sorry...front shocks - I'm trying to replace them with KYB's.

I'm going to buy a grinder tomorrow and was just wandering if anyone had done this? I searched the forums, but the last post was a year and a half ago.

Thanks,

Dustin

Take a deep 13MM socket and put it over the two upper nuts… then with a long extension you can bend the upper shock shaft until it breaks… just forget using the shock after that…. I believe Matco & Snap-On tools used to make a tool designed just for that purpose….

You can also use a sawsall and cut the shock shaft easily through the lower bushing, (of the upper shock mount) being careful not to cut into the inner wheelwell of the car.

Did you just cut right through the bushing? I just wanna make sure I don't screw this up is all. Was it difficult to get the reciprocating saw in there?

Thanks,

Dustin

Well, I ended up using a 4.5 inch angle grinder with a 5 inch metal cut-through blade. Thanks for the help.

Cut the bush with a knife, then use a hacksaw to cut through the shocker.
