I have a new problem that seemed to form in the last few days. I noticed this as the front windshield isn't being defrosted in the morning which causes some problems. I later notice that no air is coming out of any of the vents. The cabin fan no longer works, and I can't hear it blowing/spinning. Today I tore the whole assembly apart, and did some testing. The fan doesn't spin when the car is on. With a multimeter, I could measure no resistance through the motor, so that seems to be okay from an electrical standpoint. I measured a voltage of 12v at the connector that goes to the motor. It was always ~12v no matter if the fan control on the ACC was set to off or full on. So in the end, I have no idea what is going on, except the fan doesn't spin.
Simplified Saab WIS Procedure for "Fan doesn't work":
1) Check Fuse #3 and make sure it's live.
2) With key in ignition and ignition turned to ON, unplug the 8-pin connector from the rear of the control panel and check whether pin 2 of the connector is live.
3) Check the wiring from pin 2 to fuse 3 for continuity/shorting.
4) Unplug the fan's connector and leave control panel plugged in. Check (for ACC models):
-fan speed 1 should give a reading of 12 V on pin 1 (
-fan speed 2 should give a reading of 12 V on pin 7
-fan speed 3 should give a reading of 12 V on pin 6
-fan speed 4 should give 12 V on pin 3
-Change control panel if any reading is incorrect
5) Turn igniton back OFF. Check the leads for shorting/continuity if the last step gave all correct readings, but you got bad readings in the step before that.
If you don't find anything there, you'll probably need the Tech II/ISAT connected...
Well, I've came to the conculsion that it must be the blower motor itself that is causing problems. I think I'm going to have to spend some money (actually a lot of money) on a new motor/fan. Thanks for the help 20Ted.
Sometimes, when the fan dies, it is related to the ACC fan controller. Have you verified that you can run the fan manually under other modes? Does it work in ECONO? When my fan died, it was the fan controller that died, not the fan motor itself.
do you get blown air through other vents? there are flaps that tend to stick and not open. Recalibration of the ACC can help sometimes. This is of course, if the blower is working.

I've checked, and the fan doesn't come on in any of the modes. I'll check the fan controller, as it's a little cheaper than the fan to replace.
I looked into getting a fan from saabsite.com, which I've ordered from before, and the price seemed a little high for a motor and a plastic squirrel cage. My dad wanted me to call the local dealer, just to check that we were going to pay a resonable price. The dealer wanted TWICE the price, and said that it would be at least 2 weeks before they could get it in stock. We've bought parts from this dealer before at ok prices, but this was unbelievable.
9/10 times the problems I am experiencing, are listed under some sort of Saab Technical Service Bullentin. Since you got nothing to lose, check the TSB and see if there is something in there that can help you:
a. Solve your problem
b. Give you the confidence to attack a related problem
The fan controller is easy to change, and it might or might not be the cause of your problem. I replaced mine a while back when the ACC was totally dead. For some strange reason, I got the fan to run on Econo.
I am assuming you already looked at the fuses right?
Have a look Here for the diagnostic procedure c/w pictures. There is also a link at the foot of the page that will take you to the procedure for replacing the fan resistor if required.

Okay, I am in need of some major help. I have no idea what is going on that prevents the cabin fan from spinning. We got a new cabin fan today, but that didn't help. We did some more intense probing with the multimeter, and found that both wires leading to the fan itself have 12 volts. I have ACC, and no matter what setting the fan is "manually" set at, the fan always seems to get 12 volts. We tested and the ground to the motor is good. We also checked the fan controller on the side of the evaporator, and 12 volts seemed to be getting to that, but it was a little confusing to test it. I fear that we may end up going to the independant Saab place, as this is now over our heads.
On a better note, I have learned lots about my Saab, and enjoyed working on it, although I am frusterated with my lack of progress.
Well, we decided that we are going to try a new fan controller. It's likely that the Saab specialist would have tried this, and it's just cheaper and easier if I do it, especially considering how easy it is to get to. Wish me luck. :-?
I finally found a solution to my cabin fan problem that has been driving me crazy. After installing a new fan, which didn't solve the issue, today I installed a new fan controller. This was the culprit, and it had been installed incorrectly by a previous person, as the spacer that's not suppose to be installed was on there. I am just happy that it's fixed.
Yeah, I used silicone-based thermal grease. We decided that it had to be the controller, because somewhere in the circuit was bad. We checked the ground - driver's side A-pillar, which was good, so that left of controller. We're thinking that the combination of an old fan -the one that was on there looked to be in need of replacing and was probably drawing more power than usual, and the controller not making good contact on the evaporator caused it the fail. I can't even begin to imagine how much a dealer would have charged to fix this.
It is now 11:30 PM Chicago time and my heater fan now works, thanks to all the tips on this post . Now I can drive my Saab up to Wisconsin for Thanksgiving instead of driving my girlfriends Chevy Cavalier. A sincere thanks to all, Ill think of you when I downshift into third and make a pass on the highway! :cheesy:
i have a 9.3 1998 model
and my problem is :
since 12 months ,the speed of the cabin fan is erratic
and now the fan always run at full speed
even the engine is off ..i have to put away the fuse
(number 3 or letter C) to power off the cabin fan
i have read that maybe the module fan controller is
faulty..I have put away the glove box and
the side panel to find the fan controller.
(i want to put it away to show to one of my friend who
is good at fixing electric/electronic part or buy a new one)
I m not sure where this part is ...
On ASboy_genius picture, is the fan controller at the center
of the picture with two white-grey screws and a cable
plugged at the bottom ?
or is it the big grey part at the bottom left of the picture ?
thanks ..
(if you have some advice to fix this problem, thanks in advance fro the tips ...)

(sorry for my english)
I am reading this privious conversation, trying to learn more about my own fan controller and how to diagnose it as the culprit for my ac problems and replace it, but I don't see any picture of anything circled in yellow. Am I missing something. New to this site.

Hi ASboy..... how much was the fan controller and where is the fan controller located... did you have any pic during you experiment....... that would help alot .... thanks
I need help with my Saab 9-2 2.2 Turbo Diesel 2001 51 plate UK.
My internal Fan will not switch off even when the engine is off. I have to remove the fuse. Can someone please let me know what the fix is please and how much will it cost. Also what is the step-by-step guide to fix this.
No problem, please keep us up to date with this situation, this seems to happen to many (but me)...I'm just lucky..:cheesy:
