Default Volume control on steering wheel

The volume control on steering wheel has not been working consistently for me. I'll try to turn up the volume on the steering wheel and get no response. Later the problem seems to "correct" itself.

Anyone else have this issue?

Mine squeeks when it's warm outside but then again that's the most used button in the car.

Due to the inconsistency of the problem, I can guarantee it will be impossible for me to reproduce for the dealer.

But when I drive off it will malfunction on the ride home :!

Sounds like a bad contact somewhere. Probably in the switch.

I know you've dissected your steering wheel, are the stereo switches modular or would they have to replace the whole shebang?

Probably the whole switch. Both switches actually. The left one's hard wired into the right one. I don't think a dealer would take apart the actual switch to fix it when all they have to do is replace the switch.

SS,

Let me know what the fix is from your dealer (I'm not crazy about making an appointment right away)

Thanks for your help.

I'm going to have the dealer look at it next time I go in, that way it will be documented if the problem crops up down the line post-warranty.

Similar question but not worth starting a new thread for - hate to hijack but here it is - my right hand side 'metal' trim on the steering wheel is beginning to flake where the trim meets the center of the wheel/horn button. It is visible but not substantial. Is this something the dealer should fix? I'd hate to make them get me a new steering wheel for a piece of trim. But still, this shouldn't happen. Especially with under 2000 miles on the vehicle. It looks like a blemish from the factory, not like it was hit with something or chipped purposefully.

Jason

I've got the same problem it just quit working but the volume on the radio still works. I'm going in tomorrow for 15k visit, so I'll have them fix it.

Update: Dealer replaced volume button at 15k visit. I asked them to change the door handles, but they said they weren't faded enough but promised to replace once they fade more. Also asked them to look at squeaky brakes, which they didn't do anything.

I just dropped my car at the dealer, of course the volume control started working as soon as I headed in their direction :-?

I told them it works 50% of the time, I'll let you know what the diagnosis is.

Update:
They ordered a new volume switch

I know what you mean, I'm always worried the dealer will have to reset the system to factory defaults to solve one of these dumb problems and I'll lose my AUX, disabled daytime running lights, etc...

I'm sure they could pop off the trim piece and replace it, I would take it to the dealer. There is no excuse for these parts to be wearing out so soon.
