Default The Norwegian flying moose

A leisurely Sunday drive came to an abrupt halt for a couple in southern Norway over the weekend, when a fully grown moose suddenly landed on the roof of their car.

"We didn't even have time to think when there came this enormous thud," said a shaken Leo Henriksen after the bizarre incident.

He and his wife were cruising along the two-lane Highway 405 in their little red Mazda. The couple was a few kilometers south of Vatnestrom in Iveland township, Aust-Agder, when their involuntary encounter with the moose took place.

The moose, a female weighing some 350 kilos (770 pounds), apparently had been running through the forest when she suddenly came upon a cliff leading down to the highway.

Unable to stop, the moose seemed to literally fly off the cliff, landing first on the Henriksen's car before catapulting further into the oncoming lane.

The moose-versus-motorist drama ended when Randi Olsen, driving in the oncoming lane with her young daughter, was unable to stop and hit the moose that was now lying in the road.

The moose was dead when wildlife authorities arrived on the scene. Henriksen suffered minor hand injuries, while his wife and the Olsens emerged from the incident without a scratch. Both cars, however, were severely damaged.

Henriksen told the Kristiansand newspaper Faedrelandsvennen that he and his wife lost their house in a fire in mid-January. Now they've lost their car as well, and were hoping for a sympathetic meeting with their insurance agent on Monday.

Rocky & Bullwinkle was a cartoon about a moose (Bullwinkle) and flying squirrel (Rocket J. "Rocky" Squirrel). Here's a flying moose; probably nobody noticed the squirrel.

moose are truely dumb creatures.... where I work, we had to chase one away from route 1 so it wouldnt cause a traffic accident, I wouldnt ever suggest chasing such a large object with feelings.. it may to decided to cause some damage to yourself or others, you really never understand the true size of a moose till your standing a few feet from it.

ahh, another moose story

at one point during a ski race at sugarloaf, a course worker was setting up gates when he noticed a moose walking down the hill in his direction. The course worker moved down the hill only to see the moose start running full speed at him. Then, the moose hit an icy patch, fell on his side, and slid into the woods never to be seen again.

Dear CaptBrandini! Just a litle remark about "the flying norwegian moose". It's surely a dramatic accidend for the poor couple that got this moose on their cars roof but even worse for the moose! But, please remember, no animals are dumb, the only dumb objekt on earth's surface are the humans! We are given the ability to think, do logical choises, draw conclusiones and so on. Animals react instinctivly, adoptetd in hunderedthousands of years or even more while we "modern" humans have been walking around for some few tenthousands of years.......
Have a nice day and keep smiling!!!

If you ask me, the lack of reasoning abilities, is the very definition of dumb. Instincts don't constitute intelligence... They are just... well... instincts...

That being said, I second the "Don't chase moose" thing...

Its not until you have come up close and personal with a wild moose that you realize how big they are... And if yu are out of luck you'll stumble upon a mother guariding her children....

You can see them in zoo's but they just dont reach the same sizes in captivity.

The most common traffic death in sweden (or at least one of the most common ones) is hitting a moose crossing the road.

You knock the legs out from under them, and the fall ontop of your car crushing everyone inside...

Sounds like fun, huh?

I think he meant that animals intelligence is meaningless if compared to human intelligence in that we have the gift of insight and morality whereas they have only instinct to guide them. Further to his point, we waste it all with out pettiness, jealousy and selfishness.
