Default 1987 900 Turbo Convertible "power" question

Thank you guys for this forum!
I just got a 1987 900 Turbo Convertible 70K miles auto-tranny, good condition, etc. The dealer just replaced an air-mass meter. Everything seems to work fine, but I have a question, though. The boost seems to work Ok - goes all the way up to the red zone, BUT: to my opinion there's not much power given to the car - at 4K rpm, with boost at the end of yellow and gas pedal almost down it doesn't seem to pick it up. No matter how you want it to accelerate, it won't go any faster than it "considers" right, so on freeways it's kinda pain in the butt to merge and accelerate fast, you know what I mean.

I would greatly appreciate your advice.
Thanks again and I'm glad to be a part of SAAB-ists.

I know exactly what you mean. I had an auto convertable with factory red box. I thought it was fast, until I was forced to buy a replacement.

Now I have a 1991 SPG, which is a manual. Now I have an appreciation what it would be like to go from a manual to an auto.

There is a lot of power lost to the tranny. I would try to raise the boost. I was running 3.0 bar FPR, red box, 15 PSI boost, which would hit over boost once in a while.

My stock SPG is faster than that car was.

Good luck.

Jay

Don't forget - Convertibles are also heavier than sedans This also puts more stress on the transmission. Be careful.

It seems from your responses that it's normal to slowly speed up with such configuration. Am I right?

Just noticed today. When I start to accelerate, at the point where it seems not ot gain power I release acc. pedal and press it again - it gains power and so on - as if it shifts the gear, but it's not actually.

Yeah, but the thing is that it had a lot more power before air-mass meter change. Maybe theyaccidently took some hose off or something. I cannot tell if ti's true - it seems fine visually. Also I'm concerned about this power shifting thing - it gains power to a certain point, I release accelerator a bit and depress it again - there's a gain, and so forth and so on - I have to do it about 5-7 times to get to 65mph.

Can it be the wastegate sticking?

I will definetely post the solution/cause here when it's Ok
