Default Printer Setup Help

I have a small local network at home, with a printer (HP Deskjet 640C) attached to one of the computers. I would like to be able to send prints from the other computer but am having slight difficulties at the moment.

The installation disk only allows for the computer actually connected to the printer, so isn't any use for the remote PC. I can use the Add Printer option from the Printers section of 'My Computer' which finds the printer over the network, but the list of drivers that are then listed doesn't include the 640C. Clicking on the 'Have Disk' button allows me to find a .inf file on the CD but then I cannot install the file.

Am I missing something obvious at the moment?

If you are having Windows connect remotely to the printer, then you can go ahead and use those disks for the driver. Windows will know where to send the data too. Also, with older HPs the drivers are fairly interchangable. You could use the driver than came with windows that is the closest to what you have. It works okay when using drivers for an older printer with a new one, but using drivers for a new one can be problematic with an old one.

One way to get around this is to install the printer on the remote computer as if it is connected to the lpt1 port ( don't print test page). Then when you are done change the port to \\computer name\printer name. That is how I get around the HP driver problem.

The other way to do it is to bowse the network and find the printer. Right click on it and select install or connect ( depends on OS if this is available).

Good Luck
Dan

What OS are you using on the two computers?

XP on the computer with the printer, and 98 on the other.

I am by no means a computer expert (too old, mechanical engineer by profession, electronics scare me!) but there is something in the Control Nanel / Networks page that enables you to set up File and Printer sharing across MS Networks. I remember setting up the "sharing" facility for a previous small home network but, as I'm not currently running a network, I can't actually remember how it was done. Probably in the initial set-up. The "server" PC (that's driving the printer) must be booted-up when trying to access the printer from another PC on the network as it (server PC) controls all activity.

Hope this helps ........ you may already have done all this.

I think I've got it working.

I've installed the printer as a HP 660C as that driver was available (as were a host of other HP drivers other than the 640) and the test page came out okay.
