Default A/C "retro-fit" Kit...Any luck?

Spotted this on eBay:

I am interested in fixing my A/C this summer. Any luck with these kits? What are the biggest failure areas for Saab A/C units and ow would one go about changing the dryer, as it states in the auction?

My 900 came converted so I can't help you with this item but...somewhere to start would be....
You should visit the Tech help section and especially the Townsend site.

Default AC retrofit

I purchased a changeover kit from NAPA and was going to do the retrofit today but I broke the cheap plastic hose connector because I overtightened it to the oil charge can.
I had no problem putting the supplied fitting on the compressor. I'm going to get another kit and try it again. I'll post the results here. This kit say's nothing about changing the dryer (which is always recommended to change anytime the system is opened for repair but rarely needed)
I've done lots of AC work (I'm a retired auto mechanic) and never had to change a dryer unless the system was contaminated. I've heard good and bad things about R134 retrofits and am about to experience it for myself.

Default AC retrofit

I've done a little research and came to find out there are a few products out there that are replacements for R12
(besides R134) I was discussing the recharging methods with a friend who owns an auto repair shop. He told me R134 works well with domestics (American) but not so good with European A/C systems and recommended the R12 replacement. I'm going to get the brand name and will do a follow up post here. I've decided not to rush into recharging my Saab with R134 especially if there is something that works better. Also from my research I've read where R134 can have some nasty effects on compressors and hoses.
