Default Removing flywheel and crank pully

I have been using the "stuff the cord into pot one" method to be able remove the crank pully and flywheel is there any other method? I am afraid of damaging the valves, but will they be ok? Also buying a suitable flywheel lock is nearly 80 !! Any other ways of doing it?

Impact gun will do it. I've heard of some some people using inexpensive electric ones to do the job. Probably a lot less than 80 GBP.
