Removing flywheel and crank pully

I have been using the "stuff the cord into pot one" method to be able remove the crank pully and flywheel is there any other method? I am afraid of damaging the valves, but will they be ok? Also buying a suitable flywheel lock is nearly £80 !! Any other ways of doing it?

Sounds like you really need a copy of the WIS;

Impact gun will do it. I've heard of some some people using inexpensive electric ones to do the job. Probably a lot less than 80 GBP.
