I put 15k VERY hard miles on mine (including track duty) and never had anything go wrong with it. I think they break when you pussyfoot them.

Didn't end up with an Audi after all, got a 2013 VW Passat TDI SEL to share the garage with the 9-5. It is a very nice car, quite similar to the Audi A6, but with outstanding fuel mileage averaging mid 40's per gallon after first fill up.

1971 Dodge Charger (base model)
1973 Pontiac Grand Prix (400 cu in/6.6l V-8 -- the whole car rocked at idle)
1975 Oldsmobile Cutlass S (350 cu in/5.7l V-8, much better balance)
1978 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (260 cu in./4.2l V-8 mated to the Turbo-Hydramatic 200, which failed three times (!))
1986 Saab 900S 3-door, 2.1l 16-valve, 5-speed, Admiral Blue
1983 Volvo 240 Turbo GLT - the Turbo brick!!
1989 Dodge Spirit ES - 2.4l Turbo, 5-speed transaxle, electrical problems galore.
1993 Saab 900 Turbo CE 3-door -- WHY DID I SELL THIS CAR? WHY??
1999 Marcury Sable LS -- better than you may think
1999 Pontiac Bonneville SE -- meh
2001 Ford Taurus SES -- best car by the numbers I've ever owned
2006 Chevrolet Impala LT (company car)
1988 Saab 900 Turbo Convertible -- I brought this car back from the dead
1999 Saab 9-5 SE -- daily driver so that I could work on the 'vert
2009 Audi A4 quattro turbo (company car) -- amazing, would buy one again
1991 Saab 900 SPG Convertible -- sweet! I will never sell this car.
2012 Dodge Journey SXT AWD (company car) -- way, WAY better than you can ever imagine. A truly competent grocery getter.

Bold for cars that I still own.

Mine
  • 1987 Accord DX... Great car but sadly an automatic. Rust eat it up just like most older Hondas.
  • 1993 9000CS. Written off when an old guy crashed into it.
  • 1995 9000CSE. Great motor and gearbox.. everything else was broken. Sold it.
  • 1999 9-5S. Fantastic car but I wrote it off by rear ending an SUV with a trailer hitch.
  • 2005 9-5 Aero. Love this thing... Already done 162K on the original clutch and still going strong. Sadly it's the last SAAB I'll ever get to own.

I have to add one to the list. Just picked up a 1979 MG Midget 1500cc. I LOVE this car. I'm driving the Saab to work, and using the MG on the weekend

I don't change cars often. Since the Saab is new (to me, anyway), I will drive it for years more(?).

'79 Firebird ('86-'96)
'69 Firebird convertible ('90-'95)
'78 Firebird Trans Am SE gold ('94-'11)
'87 Plymouth Reliant wagon ('96-'05)
'97 Saab 900S ('11 -)

Except for the convertible, all the cars were driven until rust claimed them. Which is the likely fate for the Saab.
