To chuck this in as well:
http://www.pistonheads.com/news/defa...ryId=25816.htm

So does this mean only Hybrid Saab's will be sold now? Or will they still carry the regular models as well? Seems a waste to chuck out all the R&D.

well, i won't buy an electric car for sure (there is absolutely NO infrastructure here for one), and I doubt I would buy a hybrid either, unless it is going to have a 0-60 time of 7 seconds at the most...

The whole concept of a hybrid as asinine to me. You add all that weight and pollution from the batteries, and then it doesn't get much better mileage than a 90s VW turbo diesel, and you can make your own WVO!

I'd much rather see a line of highly efficient turbo diesels come to the US. Every manufacturer has them, but they keep them in Europe, and screw the US market.
Last time I was in France I drove a diesel ford, and calculated out 49MPG.

yeah seriously. but i am also super concerned with speed. I don't want a slow car. If I want a faster car that uses more gas, that should be my choice if I want to pay more for fuel.

More pain and heartache in a short bit for the good people of Saab. Niche cars going into a niche market with no support doesn't stand much of a chance. Of course I can't say for sue but I strongly feel this is going to be a failure. I guess I'm a BMW guy now.

Sub par economy cars with a badge of a European maker aren't my thing.

That's where mind is at. Saab has very particular branding, so doing something like this would be a huge mistake, they'll see their loyal fan-base running for other similarly positioned brands. That's not to say they wont have the hippies in California clamoring for a full electric car, but the honest truth is that the people that like the idea of a full electric don't care about all the things that made a Saab a Saab.

Happy to wait and see on this one. I think the electric rear axle tech coupled with a turbo-4 would be fantastic for daily use - the highway power we have now, with a battery charged by the ICE that would be used at slower speeds when you get into the city - improving economy massively. The only issue really is the potentially increased weight.

However.. no idea how all this works in reality. Sounds like a good combo on paper, though.

Are they even planning to use the Saab name? I figured they were just buying the factory, etc. and would try to make it a go as some other car company. Guess it doesn't matter anyway. They can produce it in Sweden and slap a Saab logo on it but that doesn't make it a Saab. I for one hope they don't use the Saab name.

China seems to be back in the picture. Better or worse than NEV?
I owuld think better funded thann NEV and who wants SAAB taken in EV direction? Hybrid with a small turbo? Maybe

"The deal did not include the intellectual property rights for the Saab 9-5, which are owned by General Motors. It also excluded Saab Automobile Parts. "

I assume this means parts shortages will continue? The parts arm is still insolvent, yes?

"National Electric Vehicle said its first model would be based on the current Saab 9-3 with Japanese technology. It said it hoped to have its market debut “at year-end 2013/2014.” It will also be working to roll out an all-new electric model initially aimed at the Chinese market.

They plan to produce a niche vehicle in Sweden and sell it in China???!?!? Given the high overhead of producing a vehicle in Sweden and Chinese import tax (which I believe is around 40% of the value of the vehicle), I fail to see how they would have any chance of success.
