Question Clunking sound when turning

I'm getting a "clunk-clunk-clunk" (or a knock-knock-knock) sound coming from the front of my car when I turn right/left moving at slow speeds. It even happens when I turn in reverse.

I've been searching the forum and so far I'm not finding any clear answers.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas?

Could be the CV joint, but I doubt it.

It's more likely worn bushes (drop link or sway bar). Put the car on a ramp and check if there's any play in the suspension components. I've just replaced my drop links and sway bar bushes (65,000 miles) and it cost me £60 in parts.

You can fit drop links yourself with just a jack (and stands) and an 18mm socket. The sway bar bushes are slightly more difficult, as the subframe has to be dropped.

A good mechanic should be able to diagnose it quite quickly.

Possible Strut mount. My left one went out last summer. Easy fix, clunking went away.

The symptoms you describe appear to be a classic example of failing CV joints.

Thanks for the replies, If it's my cv joints would I be better of just replacing my front axles?

Is there a DIY on this site for doing that?

to cure cv joint cheapest way is to do just the joint
it will be the outer cv's as the inners would make noise all the time not just stressed on full steering lock

changing axle???
it dosnt technically have one mate
did you mean change the entire front driveshaft?
(this is the part that contains the cv joint)

it could also be that the strut bearings are siezing up.

@ datonyb right, I was thinking of my accord :/

Does anyone have the part numbers for the outer cv's? Is there a DIY on the site for this?

I'm also noticing a "clicking" sound coming from the front when I hit the breaks any ideas there? It only makes the sound once and happens intermittently. This car sure likes to make noise...

I've been reading more about the strut bearings, etc, the symptoms admittedly sound similar.

I'm going to take a look under the car and see if anything stands out with the cv joints first.

A friend had the same clunking sound when turning the steering wheel even when the car was at still.
The problem was due to worn strut top mounts (bearing+base).
Open the engine bonnet, have someone turning end-to-end the steering wheel, and listen carefully if there is any sound coming from the strut top mounts. It is very easy to spot it.

Does it get worse with more throttle?

If yes. Most likely CV's.

It could also be a cracked spring, these cars are well known for springs cracking.

im havin the same problem, i havent had it professionally looked at yet but i found no play in any of my suspension components so im assuming its my cv axle. i hate assuming though but as i cant afford a proper mechanic im goin with that first

I can't say it gets worse with more throttle. It only happens at slow speeds turning hard forward or reverse. (Starting to think it is the strut mounts as suggested above).

Funny thing is I went to troubleshoot yesterday and tried turning sharp slowly and now I can't hear the damn sound! Confused at best now!

you should hear a cv with wheel jacked up full lock and turn by hand

after doing my brakes today i hope its your strut bearing mate as its a doddle to remove struts (cant believe how simple the design is)
two bolts on lower strut and the nut on top mount !

even considering grabbing a set of eibachs now as simples to change springs on these cars

Just had this exact problem, the clunk clunk, the slow speeds, everything. Strut bearing cap. Had them replaced ACDelco and had Monroe struts put in (why not when the whole thing is unbuttoned anyways and the original struts had 90k on them). Parts and labor ran about 400 total.

Question

Finally got around to checking this out today. I jacked the car up nd turned the wheels. No sounds from the cv's but I believe you guys are correct, thre was a definite sound coming from the top of the struts!

Just looking online, are these the parts I'm looking for?

http://eeuroparts.com/Main/PartDetail.aspx?id=13270705 (out of stock )

http://eeuroparts.com/Main/PartDetail.aspx?id=13188763

http://eeuroparts.com/Main/PartDetail.aspx?id=13178464

Yeah, I might do the springs too, does anyone have any links for anything decent online?

Yes, My clunking went away with just the mount. They have a bearing available as well.
