So I picked up a 2003 9-5 Aero wagon today. It needs shocks / struts. What's recommended? Prefer something inexpensive rather than a performance upgrade.
Also, the tailgate strut has gone out. Where can I get a new one? My usual parts places don't have them. Thanks! |

Monroe offers decent quality for low price.

might as well just pick up some stock struts from eeuroparts.com. I would go for bilstien hd struts because they would be even better, but not sure how much more expensive they would be. It depends on how many struts you are replacing.

Those Bilstein HDs are xpensive.
Meyles are really cheap, anyone have experience? I put them on our Lemons car and they seem to work pretty well, but how would they work on an Aero? What about the Koni Sports? I see those for $650 for a set. And I still gotta source a set of tailgate shocks. |

I wouldn't cheap out on the struts personally because they make the car ride so much better if they are good quality. Konis aren't bad and would be better than monroes or any other weird brands, but I've heard the bilsteins are better. Like I said the stock ones, which are sachs brand, aren't bad. If you really don't care about ride quality you could try the monroes if they are cheaper.

I just replaced the Wagon Hatch Shocks because they had failed and the door weighed a ton. It was very straight forward. I got a pair of used shocks from ebay for $40.
I'd look for a decent used set of rear struts.

What else should I do with my new car? It has 120k on it. Planning on doing a Seafoam treatment in a few days and maybe dropping the oil pan. |

I had bilsteins hd on my old 2002 9-3... They were great! But it was quite on the firm harsh side.... I was thinking next time I would get koni yellows and set them to the softest...
I'm not sure how the 9-5 chassis would fare with the bilsteins though... I also have a 2001 9-5 AERO wagon.... Stock... And sometimes I wished I had softer shocks.... Oh well.... Can't go wrong with either bilsteins or koni. Sent from my HTC
